Hurricane Erin has been upgraded to a Category 5 system today after undergoing a rapid intensification overnight, according to forecasters at the National Hurricane Center (NOAA).

Erin is currently packing maximum sustained winds of 160mph (260 km/h) as she trails 764 nautical miles to the south of Bermuda as of Saturday.

According to the Bermuda Weather Service’s forecast discussion, the island could expect to feel the effects of Hurricane Erin as early as Monday.

“Slight to moderate seas build towards rough later on Monday with increasingly long period south-easterly swells that become increasingly hazardous, particularly along south shore.”

The Emergency Measures Organisation will meet on Monday to review the latest developments and to assess Government readiness should any impacts to Bermuda be expected.

The Ministry said further updates will be issued thereafter.

Meanwhile, BELCO said its Crisis Management Team is reviewing and commencing storm preparations and urges residents to make necessary storm preparations this weekend including tree trimming.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted an “above normal” Atlantic hurricane season for 2025.
