Economy and Labour Minister says a living wage could be on the table by 2026
Bermuda’s minimum wage will rise to just over $17 an hour on September 1st, and Government says it’s a key step toward ensuring economic growth is inclusive. But could a living wage follow next year?
In a sit-down interview with Alisa Bernardo, Jason Hayward, Minister of Economy and Labour, confirmed work is already under way on a possible living wage.
Currently, a household income and expenditure survey is being finalized by the Department of Statistics, with results expected by the end of the year.
Minister Hayward said: “The results of that survey will give us a clear indicator of household incomes and expenditure patterns within the community to determine an appropriate living wage rate. It is my aim that at least by 2026, we’ll be talking about what a living wage may be in Bermuda.”
