Government cites safety and fleet limits; Opposition calls for clear pan
Cutbacks on the Pink Ferry Route are being described as a symptom of wider infrastructure neglect.
That’s the view of the Opposition, who are pressing Government to provide commuters with a clear plan and timeline for ferry service improvements they can rely on.
Meanwhile, Government says the revised schedule is based on usage patterns and the operational limits of the ageing ferry fleet.
More in the above report.
Full statement from the Ministry of Transport:
“The decision regarding the revised schedule on the Pink Route was driven by urgent mechanical issues affecting the ageing ferry fleet and required immediate action to ensure public safety. The revised schedule is based on usage patterns and the operational limitations of the ageing ferry fleet. Data showed that the highest demand for the Pink Route occurs during morning and evening commute hours. By concentrating service during these peak periods, the Department aimed to maximise public benefit while minimising strain on the vessels.
“Reducing midday operations allows the ferries essential downtime, helping to prevent further mechanical issues and extend their service life. This approach strikes a balance between meeting commuter needs and preserving the fleet until long-term upgrades can be implemented.
“At this time, the Government is not pursuing alternative transportation options such as a minibus service, either by road or water. However, the focus remains on maintaining and optimising existing services, including the Pink Route ferry, while exploring long-term solutions that balance cost, efficiency, and community needs.
“In 2024, the Government placed an order for two new fast ferries from Strategic Marine, a reputable shipbuilder based in Singapore. These vessels are designed to replace the ageing fleet and will offer improved speed, comfort, and reliability for daily commuters and visitors alike. Delivery is expected by late 2025, marking a significant step toward modernising Bermuda’s public transportation system.
“The Ministry continues to welcome public input as part of future transport planning.”
