Causeway open – but motorists should stay off the road. Airport to re-open, schools remain closed
As Bermuda emerges from the impacts of a Category 2 hurricane, officials have provided key updates on weather conditions, transportation, government services, and recovery efforts.
Weather and Causeway
Winds are expected to gradually decrease over the next 24 hours, although strong gusts remain a concern. Residents are urged to exercise caution if outdoors. The Causeway has been assessed and reopened to traffic, but drivers are advised to remain off the roads unless in an emergency while recovery operations continue.
Transportation
LF Wade International Airport is scheduled to reopen at 12:00 noon today, with the first arrival expected at 1:50 p.m. Passengers are encouraged to confirm flight details with their airlines.
The Department of Public Transportation (DPT) has suspended bus service while assessing road conditions along routes. Updates on resumption are expected later today. Meanwhile, the Royal Bermuda Regiment and work crews continue clearing major arteries such as Middle Road and South Shore Road. Some side roads remain impassable, and motorists are strongly urged to travel only if absolutely necessary.
Government and Education
Government offices are expected to reopen and resume full operations tomorrow, pending final updates from the Ministry of Public Works and Environment.
All schools remain closed as the Ministry of Education assesses building safety and power supply issues. An announcement on school openings for tomorrow will be issued later this afternoon.
Shelters and Health
Fifty-four people sought refuge at the CedarBridge Academy shelter during the storm. As conditions improve, many have begun to leave. Officials extended thanks to Alfred Maybury, Director of Child and Family Services, and his team for their support.
The Lamb Foggo Urgent Care Centre remains operational and will continue to provide services throughout the recovery period.
Emergency Services
Police reported a relatively quiet night. The Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service responded to sporadic utility pole fires overnight, while the Department of Corrections reported no incidents.
Message to the Public
Officials commended the public for their resilience, preparation, and unity during the storm. “We have just come through a serious Category 2 hurricane, and I want to commend the people of Bermuda for their preparations and unity. Your resilience in the face of adversity is nothing short of remarkable,” a spokesperson said.
Thanks were also extended to emergency teams for their tireless efforts to protect lives and restore services.
The Emergency Measures Organisation (EMO) will meet again at 2:00 p.m. today to provide further updates on schools, public transportation, and other recovery matters.
