Hurricane Melissa Now a ‘Potential Threat’ to Bermuda

EMO to meet today as Minister urges vigilance and solidarity with Jamaica

As of the 6:00 a.m. Bermuda Weather Service (BWS) forecast, Hurricane Melissa is considered a potential threat to Bermuda, with the storm’s closest point of approach projected for 3:00 a.m. Friday. The current track has Melissa passing the island as a Category 1 hurricane.

The Ministry of National Security confirmed that the Emergency Measures Organisation (EMO) will convene this afternoon to assess Melissa’s progress as it tracks through the Caribbean. A public advisory will be issued following the EMO meeting. The Ministry also reminded residents that the Atlantic hurricane season remains active through November 30.

Minister of National Security Michael Weeks said, “We are continuing to monitor Hurricane Melissa closely, and I want to assure residents that our agencies are staying ahead of developments. This is the time to remain alert and pay close attention to official updates. We must never allow familiarity with hurricane season to lead to complacency.”

Minister Weeks added, “I also want to take a moment to echo the concern and solidarity expressed by Premier David Burt. Our thoughts are with the people of Jamaica as they brace for a direct impact from this powerful storm. Many in our community have significantly close ties to Jamaica, and we stand with them as the island faces this dangerous situation.”

Residents are encouraged to review household preparedness plans and stay informed via official channels, including the Bermuda Weather Service and the EMO, for the latest public safety information regarding Hurricane Melissa.
