Sporting scores turn into new ecosystems

Football and cricket players fuel tree-planting drive across nature reserves

More than 100 new ecosystems were planted across three nature reserves over the weekend.

It’s the result of two of the island’s national sporting bodies teaming up with the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute.

The initiative, Trees 4 Scores, saw teams under the Bermuda Cricket Board and Bermuda Football Association score not only for their clubs … but for nature. Match results were converted into trees and native plantings.

BUEI CEO Traci Burgess says the partnership demonstrates how the power of collective actions can create a greener future.

For both the Football Association and the Cricket Board, it was a chance to connect Bermuda’s sporting culture with environmental stewardship … and spark some friendly competition.

Plantings were held at Spittal Pond, Sherwin Nature Reserve, and High Point Nature Reserve.

A second round is planned for spring 2026.
