Thompson & Bournemouth draw WSL leaders Manchester City in historic fourth round

Bermuda international Kenni Thompson and her AFC Bournemouth Women teammates were handed a daunting but historic home draw against Women’s Super League (WSL) leaders Manchester City in the fourth round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.

The third-tier “Cherries” secured the high-profile tie after making club history on Sunday with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Fulham. The win marked the first time the South Coast side has ever reached the fourth round of the competition, having never previously progressed past the third-round stage.

The clash against Fulham at the Ringwood Community Hub was a one-sided affair. Goals from Sophie Quirk, Molly Barron-Clark, Jenna Markham, Katie James, and Amber Treweek ensured a clinical afternoon for the hosts. Thompson, a key figure in the Bournemouth attack, started the match and played 82 minutes before being substituted, having played a vital role in the build-up to the opening goals.

The victory was part of a remarkable run for Helen Bleazard’s side, who remain unbeaten in all competitions this season. Their resilience will now face the ultimate test against an elite Manchester City squad that currently sits at the summit of the top flight and boasts Lionesses stars such as Lauren Hemp and Alex Greenwood.

The match represents a significant milestone for Bournemouth, who compete in the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division—two tiers below their upcoming opponents.

The standout fixture is scheduled to take place on the weekend of January 17th and 18th, 2026. With City’s star-studded lineup heading to the South Coast, the Cherries will be looking to produce one of the greatest upsets in the competition’s history.
