One of the most storied rivalries in Bermudian knockout football takes center stage at Wellington Oval this New Year’s Day as defending champions Dandy Town Hornets prepare to defend their Friendship Trophy crown against a resurgent North Village Rams.
The Hornets arrive in St. George’s with momentum on their side following a clinical 3-0 semi-final victory over Devonshire Cougars on Boxing Day. Spearheaded by the in-form Dante Leverock and David Jones—both of whom found the net in that outing—the Pembroke side will likely stick to the 4-2-3-1 formation that has served them so well this term. Having already edged the Rams 2-1 to lift the Charity Cup earlier this season, the holders have already laid down a significant marker.
However, history suggests a formidable psychological hurdle awaits them. In the three previous Friendship Trophy final meetings between these heavyweights, the Rams have emerged victorious every time, including a 4-2 win in 2001 and identical 2-1 scorelines in 1997 and 2006.
