Suits to silks: Minister and former MP set for motocross showdown

All roads lead to the Southside Moto Sports Park this Sunday as the Bermuda Motocross Association (BMA) hosts its highly anticipated Celebrity Motocross Race Day.

The starting gate on February 8th will feature an unusual lineup, as local dignitaries swap the halls of government for the grit of the track to support the BMA’s fundraising efforts.

Leading the charge is the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, Owen Darrell, alongside former MP Wayne Caines. While Minister Darrell has been a vocal supporter of the island’s “Pink Sand Scrambling” resurgence, this weekend marks his transition from the sidelines to the saddle.

“Support comes in multiple ways,” Minister Darrell noted. “As this is a fundraiser, I did not hesitate. Come down and watch me beat the other celebrities; it’s going to be a real deal on a scrambler this Sunday.”

The pre-race tension is already mounting. Caines, racing under #06, has wasted no time in launching a direct challenge to his fellow competitors.

“I will be scrambling down Southside on Sunday!” Caines stated. “I will win my race. Keep your eye on number 06.”

Beyond the celebrity spectacle, the event celebrates the island’s motocross heritage, featuring riders ranging from six-year-old novices to veterans aged 60 and over. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to witness the unique sight of Bermuda’s leaders navigating the jumps and berms of Southside.
