Planning approval is still pending for the development of a new seniors day-care facility at the former Gilbert Institute in Paget.
Tinee Furbert, the Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, told media that $1.8 million in capital funding has been allocated to advance the site’s design and renovation.
Once operational, the facility will offer structured day programmes, respite services and recreational activities for at least 50 seniors, including those living with dementia.
Providing an update to Bermuda Broadcasting Company, Ms Furbert said the project is awaiting planning approval for initial architectural drawings submitted by Botelho Wood Architects.
The firm was selected through a Government Request for Proposals process.

“Once we have that approval, then we will look to break ground with demolition of some of the buildings that are currently at that site, and also check for asbestos,” Minister Furbert explained.
She added that the project could not begin “soon enough” and expressed hope that ground would be broken by September. Construction, however, is expected to continue through to 2027.
The subsidised day centre is a key initiative under the National Seniors Strategy 2024. The facility aims to support seniors and their families, particularly those in the “sandwich generation” who are balancing careers, raising children and caring for ageing parents.
The project was also included in the Progressive Labour Party platform during the 2025 General Election.
