Ahead of the Senate vote to enable up to 150 ‘seasonal rideshare taxis’, Transport Minister Owen Darrell stressed that traditional taxi drivers still get first dibs on fares
Taxi drivers still come first, says Owen Darrell.
The Tourism and Transport Minister affirmed this while speaking to Bermuda Broadcasting ahead of the Senate vote on amending the Motor Car Act.
The motion passed seven votes to four, with the three OBA Senators and independent Tawana Tannock voting against.
Minister Darrell says the law marks an important step, and is “designed to support the existing taxi industry while addressing long-standing gaps in service”.
Prior to the vote, the Minister emphasised how this is not intended to significantly change the traditional taxi industry but compliment it, and taxi drivers will have the chance to claim fares before they are passed on to rideshare operators.
He also said there is data to back up the plans, countering BTOA concerns.
