Kempe shines as Bermuda’s sailors tackle testing Mallorca opener

Bermuda’s Olympic sailing hopefuls faced a baptism of fire on the opening day of the 55th Trofeo Princesa Sofia in Mallorca, as unpredictable Mediterranean winds turned the Bay of Palma into a tactical minefield.

While the sunshine suggested idyllic conditions, a series of massive, unexpected wind shifts forced the massive international fleet into a high-stakes game of chess. In the ILCA7 class, Sebastian Kempe emerged as the standout performer for the island, showing remarkable resilience to navigate the inconsistent air. After an opening 17th, Kempe found his rhythm to claim a brilliant 12th in the second race, leaving him 26th overall in a heavily congested field.

It was a more frustrating introduction for Olympian Adriana Penruddocke in the ILCA6 fleet. With the shifting breeze limiting the class to just a single race, Penruddocke crossed the line in 63rd place.

Despite the difficult start, both sailors remain firmly in the hunt with several days of racing ahead. They will be eyeing the forecast closely, hoping for more stable conditions to showcase their pace against the world’s best on the road to the Olympic Games.
