With only seven days remaining until the legendary trek from Somerset to Bernard Park, the island’s running community is reaching peak anticipation. The Bermuda Day Half Marathon Derby is more than just a race; it is the ultimate test of endurance, tactical patience, and national pride.
As athletes begin their final taper, a look back at the 2026 road racing season reveals a landscape of high-speed duels and consistent dominance across the core distances.
The season’s benchmarks were set early in the 5K arena, where competition has been particularly fierce. Philip Woollins recently claimed the Waterfront Wellness 5K title with a solid 18:00 performance. The women’s race produced a thriller; Marie Dore and Colette Durkin both stopped the clock at 19:03, with Dore taking the win after a chip-time review. Earlier, Maddie Durkin clocked an explosive 18:15, marking her as a serious threat for any distance she enters.
The 8K distance highlighted the strength of Kallan Richardson, who posted a blistering 26:56 at the Ray Swan 8K. He faces a formidable field, including defending champion Sean Trott, who is looking to replicate his 2025 victory, and the returning five-time champion Lamont Marshall.
The men’s field is further bolstered by Dennis Mbelenzi, fresh off a 2:29:07 marathon win, alongside Spencer Haldeman and Woollins.
On the women’s side, the battle appears wide open. Estienne Coetzee has been the picture of perfection, accumulating a maximum 100 points in the local series. She will be challenged by the seasoned Teresa Ruiz and the in-form duo of the Durkin sisters and Marie Dore.
As the clock ticks down to May 24th, the focus shifts to mental preparation. Whether it is a repeat for Trott or a new champion in Richardson or Mbelenzi, the 2026 Derby promises to be a historic chapter in the island’s legacy.
