Some players leave records. Some leave trophies. The greatest leave a legacy.
Tributes have poured in from Cleveland County Cricket Club and Harrington Workmen’s Club following the announcement that Dion Stovell, one of Bermuda’s finest modern cricketers, has retired from the historic Eastern Counties Competition.
From his debut as a Colt in 2010 to his international career with the national team, Stovell’s journey has been defined by loyalty and big-match excellence.
The all-rounder was the catalyst for Cleveland’s modern resurgence, playing a pivotal role in ending the club’s agonizing 33-year wait to win the Eastern Counties Cup in 2014.
His unbeaten 82 against St. David’s and a historic century against Bailey’s Bay remain etched in local folklore, cementing his reputation as an elite clutch performer.
Stovell retires as a former winning captain and the fastest player in tournament history to reach 1,000 runs. He ends his illustrious Eastern Counties career with 1,031 runs, 31 wickets, and multiple centuries.
“Cleveland is where I started my cricket,” Stovell said. “Eastern Counties is something I always dreamt about winning for the fans and the community. Cleveland will always have a place in my heart.”
In a joint statement, the clubs added: “You retire a Cleveland County legend, an Eastern Counties legend, and one of Bermuda cricket’s finest. Thank you for the countless memories.”
