Push for litter-free celebrations at Elbow Beach this Christmas

Celebrating Christmas Day with a festive toast at Elbow Beach has become a beloved tradition for many. However, Keep Bermuda Beautiful (KBB) is reminding revellers to use the provided trash bins.
In anticipation of the informal, yet annual gathering, several neighbourhood stakeholders are gearing up to provide safe parking and extra waste bins.
The Coral Beach & Tennis Club will offer parking at the Horizon’s property, and volunteers from St. Paul’s Anglican Church will assist with further parking logistics. Donations to the church are welcome.
KBB plans to place dozens of additional trash bins on the beach, emphasizing that glass bottles and aluminium cans—historically the most common litter—should be recycled. If bins are full, beachgoers are asked to take their trash home.
Angel Smith, KBB’s Executive Director, stated: “Christmas Day at Elbow is the closest thing Bermuda has to a ‘Leave No Trace’ event, which is even more remarkable since there are no formal hosts or organizers. Beachgoers have shown great respect for Bermuda’s beauty, and when there are plenty of bins, no one litters.”
KBB, along with volunteers, will return on Boxing Day to tackle any leftover trash. Wilmot’s Trucking will transport the bagged waste, which in previous years has amounted to as much as one tonne.
“The Department of Parks cannot be expected to handle everything, especially during the holidays, so KBB and dedicated volunteers have stepped in to help,” Ms. Smith explained.
