General Election called for February 18th, 2025

Bermuda is heading to the polls once again, with a General Election to be held on Tuesday, February 18th 2025.

Premier David Burt made the announcement moments ago.

The PLP has comfortably won the last two General Elections.

They ousted the OBA in 2017, winning 24 out of 36 seats, and 59% of the popular vote.

Premier Burt then called a snap election in 2020, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.

With historically low voter turnout, the PLP won 30 out of 36 seats and 62% of the vote.

Since then, Jarion Richardson became oppositon leader as the OBA sought to rebuild its viability.

More players have entered the political sphere – most notably, the return of former UBP Premier Sir John Swan, bringing with him a movement of independent candidates.

The Free Democratic Movement, led by Marc Bean, also returned following a hiatus.

With the rise of the new independents, and the return of the FDM, there’s a chance that up to four candidates will compete in a good number of seats.

An issue on which votes may turn is the cost of living. The growth of International Business has continued to shore up our economy, but wages in several other sectors have not kept up with inflation.

Crime and anti-social behaviour is also high on the list of concerns for residents, along with the uncertainty around school closures and education reform.

With a massive majority in the House, it’s certainly ‘advantage, PLP’ as the campaign begins… but one thing is certain:
Every party and candidate will approach the general election on as if there’s everything to play for.
