Premier Burt cited new initiatives including reducing energy taxes by an additional 20% in the next Budget, a senior day-care to support the “sandwiched generation”, free primary care visits for all HIP insurance holders and specialist visits for FutureCare policyholders.
During Tuesday’s news conference at the party’s headquarters, Premier Burt said that the cost of living commission has faced pushback from grocers who are not sharing their prices for fear the government will enter into competition.
He said while the PLP has no intention of operating a grocery store, it will support community groups willing to open co-ops selling essential goods.
Premier Burt was joined by party colleague and MP for Constituency 7, Hamilton South, Anthony Richardson, who said the decisions by Wayne Caines and Derrick Burgess not to stand in the election were not evidence of a rift within the party.
And Premier Burt says their choices were personal.
