Attorney General and Senator Kim Wilkerson today urging residents to refrain from cannabis use around young people who may be at risk of developing psychosis due to second hand smoke.
Senator Wilkerson reminded the public that de-criminalization of cannabis possession up to 7 grams remains in place but stressed that it remains illegal to use cannabis in public.
She said government remains committed to a path for safe adult recreational use of cannabis but with responsible use that protects young people from any exposure to harm.
As of the 2023 National School Survey, 28.5 % percent of senior four students have used marijuana. Most males start cannabis use at age 12 or younger and females start at 15, on average.
Senator Wilkerson cited an increase in the number of young people experiencing psychosis as a result of cannabis use.
