Residents are asked to avoid Montpelier Road

More than 1,000 customers are without power this morning, most of them in Pembroke, where BELCO crews are responding to a downed power line.
In a statement to social media, BELCO said it is “aware of pocket outages scattered across the island due to high winds and overgrown vegetation.”
“Our crew is currently addressing a downed power line on Montpelier Road and a pole fire in the Fractious Street area,” the company said. “Once these emergency situations have been addressed, our team will begin working on the remaining pocket outages.”
According to BELCO, crews responded to the Fractious Street pole fire last night, which initially knocked out power to 1,310 customers. As of this morning, power has been restored to some areas, with 848 customers still without electricity.
BELCO has asked the public to avoid Montpelier Road and to use caution when driving, walking, or riding near crews in other restoration areas.
“The safety of our crew, the public, and all motorists is paramount,” the company added.
Customers affected by outages are reminded to unplug sensitive equipment and electronics until power is restored.
According to the Bermuda Weather Service (BWS), strong east-northeasterly winds reached near-gale force overnight with gusts up to 45 knots in exposed/elevated areas. Conditions are expected to remain windy and showery through the day as a frontal boundary lingers in the area, with possible improvement by evening as winds ease.
Meanwhile, forecasters continue to monitor Tropical Storm Jerry, which poses a potential threat but is expected to pass well to the east of the island.

As of the 6 am advisory, the BWS said Jerry’s nearest forecasted point to Bermuda is 165 nm to the ESE at 3 pm on Sunday.
“It is worth noting that confidence in the long range track of Jerry passing comfortably to the E of BDA later this
weekend is increasing, minimising any direct impacts other than perhaps some long period SE’ly swell most likely on Sunday,” the BWS stated.
