Tennis

Bermuda has made Davis Cup history! Trey Mallory and Daniel Phillips secured a momentous victory in the Americas Group III event, earning Bermuda a place in next year’s World Group II Play-offs for the first time in the island’s 30-year Davis Cup history.

The entire Bermuda team, including Tariq Simons, Jenson Bascome, and captain Ricky Mallory, were understandably elated with this achievement at the Costa Rica Country Club.

The crucial promotion play-off against Jamaica was a tense affair. Daniel Phillips gave Bermuda a strong start by winning his opening singles match. However, Jamaica’s Blaise Bicknell responded with a win over Trey Mallory, levelling the tie at 1-1 and setting up a winner-takes-all doubles showdown.

In that pivotal match, Mallory and Phillips elevated their game, delivering clean serves, sharp volleys, and consistent doubles play under immense pressure. Their combined effort secured the crucial victory, writing their names into Bermuda’s tennis history books. Phillips expressed his immense pride, stating the promotion “means everything” to him.

Bermuda will now join Bolivia and Puerto Rico in the World Group II Play-offs in 2026, a testament to the dedication and talent within Bermudian tennis.
