A man was hospitalized briefly after a fire engulfed his ground floor apartment on Mariner’s Lane in Pembroke.
The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to the blaze around 11pm Monday night in the Mariner’s Lane area near Admiralty House in Pembroke.
A spokesperson confirmed firefighters attended the apartment complex with two support vehicles to extinguish the fire that had severely damaged a one-bedroom ground level apartment.
There was a male occupant inside when the fire broke out, but that person had evacuated, along with other tenants shortly after the blaze started.
The man was taken to hospital for assessments for smoke inhalation, but we understand no serious injuries were sustained.
Bermuda Broadcasting News understands the single tenant, a guest worker from the Azores, lost all of his belongings in the fire.
The building showed signs of severe smoke damage where plumes of the fire had charred the exterior of the kitchen window.
Inside, we saw burnt furniture, a water heater and the whole glass veranda door had been destroyed by the fire.
The only surviving item was the tenant’s passport.
We understand the cause fire may have been connected to the cooking of grease in the kitchen, however the BFRS says an official investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire.
The tenant has found temporary housing.
