Governor visits troops on hurricane recovery mission in Jamaica

Royal Bermuda Regiment troops have been repairing storm-damaged homes in St. Elizabeth as part of ongoing humanitarian deployment

Governor Andrew Murdoch, accompanied by Minister of National Security Michael Weeks, visited members of the Royal Bermuda Regiment currently deployed in Jamaica following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.

RBR soldiers are working across Black River, Middle Quarters and Thornton in St. Elizabeth – among the hardest-hit communities – focusing on rebuilding and reinforcing roofs to better withstand future hurricanes. Many of the affected homes, occupied by families, have lacked proper protection since October.

The Governor described the visit as humbling, noting the challenging living conditions residents continue to face months after the storm. While significant work remains, the Regiment’s presence is already making a tangible difference, with families visibly grateful as repairs progressed.

Meeting the troops on site and thanking them for their volunteer service was described as a privilege, with the soldiers maintaining high spirits while carrying out the demanding humanitarian mission.
