Housing Minister says precast and modular methods will “control cost and accelerate timelines” as priority sites deliver new units

The supply of affordable housing is expected to increase by more than 200 units over the next 18 months.
That’s according to Zane DeSilva, Deputy Premier and Minister of Housing and Municipalities, who today outlined how his ministry plans to use its latest budget allocation.
The ministry has been granted an $8.2 million dollar operating budget and says it is committed to delivering housing solutions that support Bermudians.
Outlining the blueprint, Minister DeSilva reiterated more than 30 publicly owned sites have been identified for development.
“Six priority sites have been selected, and three sites are confirmed for accelerated development,” he said.
“Together, these three sites will deliver more than 200 new homes within the next 18 months, primarily one-bedroom units, with a mix of affordable and attainable homes available for rent and/or sale.
“Construction will use precast concrete and or modular methods to control cost and accelerate timelines. Financing will come from local financial institutions, supported by a Government guarantee, with delivery overseen by the Bermuda Housing Corporation and the Bermuda Land Management Corporation.”
In the short term, nine modular units for Boaz Island are expected to arrive within five to six weeks. Meanwhile, the Bermuda Housing Corporation has four active projects underway, which are expected to deliver an additional 37 units.
Alisa Bernardo asked the Minister how he plans to deliver on today’s pledges within the proposed timeframe.
The Minister’s full remarks are provided below.
