Gov’t struggles to secure contractor for dog waste bins

Some members of public continue to dump faeces and litter around Dogi Pot stations

Overflowing dog waste stations on the Railway Trail continue to go unserviced, while some members of the public are littering the sites with faeces and trash.

How swiftly this matter will be dealt with is in question, since the contractor Government selected to clean up the mess has subsequently pulled out.

Bermuda Broadcasting reported on the unpleasant matter last week, highlighting locations in Devonshire and Paget where the Dogi Pot stations are spilling out onto the ground below.

Today, the situation is worse, with drinks containers dumped around the waste stations, and bags of dog poop on the edge of the footpath.

A Ministry of Public Works and Environment spokesperson finally responded today – more than a week after we first reached out – and cited regret at the inconvenience caused.

They said, “the Department recognises the importance of maintaining clean and safe public spaces and apologise for the lapse in servicing these facilities.”

The spokesperson said a contractor had been selected to maintain the sixty-plus Dogi Pot stations across our National Parks, following a Request for Quotations issued on July 14th.

However, we were told that company has now withdrawn its offer, and the Department is in the final stages of engaging another vendor.

The spokesperson continued, “the public’s patience is appreciated as the Department moves swiftly to resolve this matter and restore regular servicing of the Dogi Pot stations across the Island.”

Meanwhile, if people simply keep adding to the poop pile and no one is cleaning up, it seems likely this story will continue to create a stink.
