The Bermuda Human Rights Commission will join the global community in observing Human Rights Day tomorrow, reaffirming its commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights under the Human Rights Act, 1981.
Lisa Reed, Executive Officer of the Human Rights Commission, stated: “The Human Rights Commission’s mission is to promote and protect human rights through education, collaboration, advocacy and enforcement.
“This annual day of recognition provides an important opportunity to reflect on our obligations, and our shared responsibility to ensure human rights are respected, protected and extended to all.
“Human rights belong to every person and upholding these rights is integral to creating a society where dignity, equality and fairness are prioritized.”
Ms. Reed said human rights recognize the inherent value of each person, regardless of background, appearance or beliefs.
And she outlined the core principles of human rights: Recognition and respect for the dignity and worth of all individuals; legal guidelines and obligations that promote equality and ensure adequate standards of living; standards to identify and measure equality, access, and fairness – and the foundational rights outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
