Kids get kitted out at Coast Guard showcase

At an open house on Saturday, youngsters got to try on the Coast Guard’s hi-tech equipment, and learn about the unit’s daily role in search and recovery on our waters

The Royal Bermuda Regiment’s Coast Guard unit hosted a family open house on Saturday, demonstrating the technology used for search and recovery operations.

Lt Col Duncan Simons, Commanding Officer of the Royal Bermuda Regiment, said it is the most active part of the RBR, and provides recruits with the opportunity to pick up new skills – including first aid, piloting, drone operation and diving.

Acting Major Jeff Patterson, the Coast Guard commander, highlighted the unit’s infrared drone capabilities, adding that they will be getting an underwater drone in March, funded through the Foreign Office.

Attendees were able to take a tour on one of the Coast Guard’s vessels, while youngsters got to try on some of the unit’s equipment – including ballistic vests and night vision goggles.
