An historic Royal Visit by His Majesty King Charles III came to an end on Saturday following a packed schedule of enagements over the past 24 hours.
King Charles, who visited Bermuda without Queen Camilla, arrived on Thursday evening in Bermuda, marking the first time a reigning Monarch had landed in the British Overseas Territory since 2009.
The last visit by King Charles to Bermuda was in 1970 as Prince of Wales and heir apparent to present the Speech to the Throne to parliament. Last evening, the Soverign remarked on the length of time that had passed before a King visited following Bermuda’s establishment as a settlement 400 years ago.
Reflecting on the relationship between the UK and Bermuda, King Charles made a statement to address invited guests at Government House during the Royal Garden Party on Friday evening.
King Charles said, “I need hardly say that Bermuda, like all the overseas territories, is a most cherished and important member of the British family, with a friendship as solid as this so-called ‘rock’.”
Today, the King was greeted by members of the Royal Bermuda Regiment, Governor Andrew Murdoch, Commanding Officer of the RBR Duncan Simons, Commissioner of the Bermuda Police Service Darrin Simons, Chief Justice Larry Mussenden, Cabinet Secretary Marc Telemaque, Opposition Leader Ben Smith and Premier David Burt.
They shook hands and shared quiet exchanges before the King departed for Buckingham Palace.
This officially concludes the Royal Visit to Bermuda and a diplomatic mission at US State visit where he addressed Congress to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence.
