Premier David Burt has explained why Bermuda is expanding its business ties with the United Arab Emirates – despite human rights concerns.
The UAE has been diversifying its economy in recent years to lessen its reliance on oil revenues.
But international rights groups continue to raise the alarm over the treatment of migrant workers, political dissendents and women.
Premier Burt told us that while he understands the concerns, it’s imperative that Bermuda has many business partners across the world.
The Premier says credit is due to the Bermuda Monetary Authority for its leadership in digital finance regulation and developments around artificial intelligence.
As a result, Premier Burt adds, other countries are listening closely to what Bermuda has to say.
