“It should be clear that there is a new reality regarding weather patterns.”
That was the message from Premier David Burt, who urged parliamentarians and the public to remain alert to the growing impacts of climate change – underscored by the recent devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica.
Speaking in the House of Assembly, Premier Burt referenced an article from the UK’s Guardian newspaper, which reported that an international team of scientists found Melissa’s “savage strength” was intensified by overheated air and ocean temperatures linked to the burning of fossil fuels.
Premier Burt said: “ … the impact of climate change is real, and the leadership required to confront this crisis must come from small island states — those who bear its brunt most severely, often to the detriment of the very people who can least afford it.”
Speaking on the tragic loss of life and the devastation to infrastructure in Jamaica caused by Hurricane Melissa, Premier Burt said his government was pleased to collaborate with private sector leaders and the Jamaican Association who have led a local appeal for aid.
He also praised the generosity of residents who offered support, as well as those who championed this cause and marshalled the logistics required to provide much-needed supplies to Jamaica.
Premier Burt said it will be determined – in consultation with relevant persons – how the Royal Bermuda Regiment can further assist the Caribbean island in the coming weeks and months.
He added: “In addition to the potential assistance of the Bermuda Regiment, Honourable Members will be aware of the annual budgetary allocation for hurricane relief. That sum will be applied to also assist in the relief effort following consultation with the Government of Jamaica to ensure that key needs are met on the Island.”
