Bermuda Backyard Ultra: He who finishes last, finishes first
It’s one of the most gruelling yet unique formats in marathon running, where the race isn’t about who finishes first. On the contrary, It’s all about who finishes last. In true Backyard Ultra fashion, participants in Saturday’s Bermuda Backyard Ultra will run as many of the course’s 6.7 km loops as possible, but with a twist: they must take as many hours as possible to win it. Edward Willis, one of the event’s organisers, reveals what runners can expect from this weekend’s one-of-a-kind challenge.
Mr. Willis, who will also be taking part in this weekend’s Bermuda Backyard Ultra, has a personal best of 13 hours—15 hours shy of the Bermuda National record of 28 hours, currently held by Jason Williams. Mr. Williams, who will be looking to add several more hours to that record on Saturday, explains why the unusual format for this growing sport, appeals to him.
