Government is working to provide a temporary alternate location for K. Margaret Carter Centre’s programmes

The sudden shutdown of the K. Margaret Carter Centre on Monday triggered an angry response from parents.
A short-term substitute location is in the works to provide ongoing support for adults with special needs, the government said in a news release on Monday.
One concerned parent told us the last minute notice of closure was “totally disrespectful”.
The government-managed Centre provides for adults with learning and physical disabilities.
It’s temporary closure was announced on Monday afternoon to, quote, “facilitate mould remediation works and air quality improvements to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all clients and staff”, end quote.
A parent told Bermuda Broadcasting that as they were picking up their dependent from the facility, they were told there would be no classes the next day.
“What is a working parent supposed to do?”, they asked. “Is your employer expected to accept that you have to remain at home with your child until further notice?”
“That type of notice is totally disrespectful to the plight of a special needs parent”, they said.
We sought a response from the Government to the concerns, and clarification if any notice was given other than the announcement on Monday.
There was no response by Thursday newstime.
However, we understand parents have been alerted that Prospect Primary has been identified as the most suitable temporary location for clients. All the same, providing accessibility solutions plus health and safety checks could take some weeks. No timeline for occupancy was provided to parents.
