Suspected drug packages wash ashore

Police recover bundles; forensic tests and regional probe underway

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) is investigating after multiple packages of suspected controlled drugs were found floating offshore and washed up along sections of Bermuda’s coastline.

According to the BPS, several reports from members of the public prompted responses from Community Patrol Officers, the Coast Guard, and the Drugs Unit. The recovered packages have been seized and secured as evidence. Preliminary examinations indicate the contents are consistent with illegal narcotics, and the bundles will undergo forensic testing to confirm their composition and possible origin.

Detective Chief Inspector Jason Smith, head of the BPS Drugs Unit, said, “We are actively investigating how these packages came to be in Bermuda’s waters and whether they are linked to any maritime activity or regional drug trafficking operations. We are liaising with our local and international partners to determine the source and potential destination of these drugs.”

Police are urging the public not to touch, move, or open any suspicious packages found on beaches or in the water. Instead, people should immediately contact:

  • Main police number: 295-0011
  • Non-emergency reporting: 211
  • BPS Community Reporting Portal: https://portal.bps.bm
  • Anonymous tips: Crime Stoppers Bermuda 800-8477

The investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided when available.
