‘We can provide more homes, faster’

Alternative construction methods could potentially allow Government to build up to twice as many units at the same cost as traditional methods, according to Chris Famous

Housing both locals and a potential influx of guest workers is a task facing Bermuda in 2026.

When it comes to Bermudians urgently needing homes, we’ve already heard about Government plans to install capsule units, starting at Boaz Island.

Chris Famous, PLP MP and Chair of the Bermuda Housing Corporation, added more to the discussion last week, citing the need to explore alternative construction methods for more permanent homes.

In an interview with our Gary Foster Skelton, it became clear why such action may be needed… the number of B.H.C’s current construction projects are nowhere near enough to meet the demand.

Mr Famous suggests that alternative methods, such as precast construction, could allow Government to build up to twice as many units at the same cost as traditional methods, in less time.

Some of those units could eventually be sold instead of rented, he says – but adds that there will be caveats to prevent someone ‘flipping’ such a property just to sell it to an investor.
