What to expect as Royal Visit begins

Ceremonial welcomes, community stops and travel disruptions planned across the island

Preparations are in full swing across the island ahead of the highly anticipated Royal Visit.

Following a trip to the United States with Queen Camilla, King Charles III is set to arrive today for his first visit to a British Overseas Territory as Sovereign.

The landmark visit marks the first by a reigning King to Bermuda, although Charles last visited the island in 1970 as prince of Wales.

Officials say the itinerary highlights Bermuda’s ties with the UK spanning culture, economic growth, and youth opportunity … while celebrating local communities.

The programme begins in St. George’s, where the King will receive a ceremonial welcome in King’s Square, including a Guard of Honour and a 21-gun salute by the Royal Bermuda Regiment.

He will then visit St Peter’s Church before heading to the Bermuda Aquarium Museum and Zoo and Trunk Island to learn about conservation efforts and mark BAMZ’s 100th anniversary.

BAMZ will be closed Friday morning, reopening at 2pm. A public viewing area will be set up in the parking lot, with additional parking at Flatts Cricket Field.

In the afternoon, the King travels to Hamilton, meeting dignitaries and local creatives at City Hall and Arts Centre before continuing to Albouy’s Point.

He then heads west, where he’ll be welcomed by Gombeys at the National Museum of Bermuda and visit the Queen’s Exhibition Hall.

At Dockyard, he’ll also meet Commonwealth athletes ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, along with youth organisations from across the island.

On Saturday, the King will officially open the new Great Bay Coast Guard Station. He’ll also meet representatives from the UK Space Agency to hear about plans for a new telescope site in Bermuda to help track space debris.

Residents are advised that traffic restrictions will be in place throughout the visit.

Road closures and delays are expected in Hamilton, St. George’s, and Dockyard.

King’s Square will be closed from 7am to 12pm on Friday.

Motorists and pedestrians are urged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and follow directions from police and traffic marshals.

The Government is encouraging the public to come out and welcome the King at King’s Square, City Hall, and Dockyard.
