Primary students visit Martello Tower, and learn about British soldiers living in the east end
How much do you know about Bermuda’s history as a British Military Outpost?
Thanks to a programme in St George’s earlier this month, there’s at least 250 Public Primary School students who will be able to tell you more about it…
Along with 34 teachers, they explored Ferry Point Park under the guidance of the St George’s Foundation.
Students learned about the fortifications such as Martello Tower, the operation of the old quicklime kiln, and the social impact of having hundreds of British soldiers living in the community.
Nekesha Holdipp, Humanities and Social Sciences Education Officer for the Department of Education, spoke about the experience. (WATCH above)
The St. George’s Foundation Chairman Stuart Smith said the learning goal of the programme is to develop the students’ understanding of the island’s history and heritage, including the significance of having a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The SGF is also grateful for the support of the XL Foundation.
