American swimmers Derek Cox and Lauren Peterson took top honours as open-water endurance took centre stage at the annual Round the Sound races in Harrington Sound.
Competitors faced testing conditions across a tiered schedule ranging from 0.8km to the flagship 10km marathon, with every race culminating in a frantic dash to the finish dock at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo.
Cox delivered an authoritative swim to capture the men’s 10km crown, clocking two hours, 19 minutes and eight seconds. Craig Munden took runner-up spot in 2:23:01, while Stephen Kenny rounded out the podium in 2:28:33.
Peterson proved equally dominant in the women’s 10km, finishing fourth overall in 2:36:46 to claim victory ahead of Nina Coetzer (2:38:04) and Eileen Mullowney (2:43:40).
The middle-distance events served up fierce battles for the line. In the 6km race, Ethan Smith pulled clear to win in 1:33:40.39, holding off Jasper Lau (1:35:58) and Noah Fulton (1:42:01).
Molly Melcher led the women’s 6km field in 1:42:35, while Lila Connolly (1:45:51) edged Christy Donley by a single second in a grandstand finish for silver.
The closest contest of the afternoon came in the 4km event, where Logan Jones held off Gianluca Bortoli by just seven seconds to take the men’s title in 1:00:11. Katherine Wheddon finished third overall in 1:03:31 to seal the women’s crown, clear of Lynsey Palmer (1:05:53) and Colette Durkin (1:07:58).
