Voters have an unprecedented amount of choice in the February 18th General Election.

The Parliamentary Registry reported 110 candidates following Nomination Day on Friday.

The incumbent Progressive Labour Party and the opposition One Bermuda Alliance have both fielded a full slate of 36 candidates.

The Free Democratic Movement has put up 10 candidates, and the Emperial Group is fielding one candidate.

The biggest boost to numbers comes from the independents. There are 27 unaffiliated candidates standing in 24 seats.

On Nomination Day, Premier and PLP Leader David Burt said the high numbers is an indictment on the OBA for “not being an effective opposition”, whereas OBA Leader Jarion Richardson said it shows that Bermuda “is ready to move on past [the PLP] Government”.

Sir John Swan has ostensibly spearheaded a movement of independents since unsuccessfully contesting the Smith’s North by-election in May 2024. He said “Bermudians are tired of party politics”.

On the high number of candidates running, FDM founder and Leader Marc Bean said “I’ve never experienced this in our political history.”

Mr Bean said it “reveals that there is a gap in terms of governance and leadership”.
