The event marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Residents are encouraged to wear purple this week Thursday in “remembrance and resolve for domestic abuse victims and survivors.”
The Cabinet Office and city buildings will also be illuminated in purple in recognition of Domestic Abuse Awareness Month.
Organiser Tammy L. Richardson-Augustus has been advocating for victims/survivors of abuse for the past decade and said this year’s theme is ‘Silence to Light.”
She said,”When children are exposed to violence, within their homes or through court decisions that prioritise contact with perpetrators over healing, we create a laboratory for violence where unresolved trauma, systemic oversight, and coerced proximity to harm converge to fuel cycles of aggression and despair.”
Attorney General and Minister of Justice Senator Kim Wilkerson said, “This initiative reflects the same spirit that underpins the Government’s commitment to Domestic Abuse Reform; the recognition that survivors deserve swift access to justice, meaningful protection, and the support needed to rebuild their lives.”
People can also contribute by donating funds to local support charities such as SCARS, Family Centre, the Centre Against Abuse, the Women’s Resource Centre and the Coalition for the Protection of Children.
A Cabinet Office spokesperson said, “We are pleased to stand in solidarity for such a worthy cause by bringing attention to this critical issue that affects our community. Every time we choose to support, acknowledge, and embrace victims of domestic abuse, we are providing a lifeline to those who have no voice or who live in fear’.”
