Excavators and workmen extract a trash truck that veered off Middle Road on Monday
Government, BELCO and Island Construction staff were working through Tuesday morning and early afternoon to extract a crashed trash truck from a field in Paget.
The wrecked vehicle had to be separated into the cabin, undercarriage and the heavy trash compactor section to gradually lift it back onto Middle Road.
The vehicle had veered off Middle Road next to Ice Queen sometime before 1:35pm on Monday, tumbling down an embankment into a field next to Paget Marsh.
According to police, the driver lost control, and all three male occupants had to be extricated from the cabin by the Fire and Rescue Service.
The men were taken to hospital for treatment of injuries that were described as non-serious.
Commuters faced severe delays as westbound traffic was diverted through the Railway Trail via White Sands Road, and eastbound traffic was rerouted to Harbour Road.
Similar diversions were in place this morning as workers braved the sun and rain for several hours.
The heavy trash compactor section eventually had to be dragged along the field by two excavators. One of the excavators was then driven up a ramp onto Middle Road, and subsequently pulled the compactor section back onto the road.
A substantial section of wall along Middle Road was destroyed in the crash. There appears to have been severe damage to some of the cedar trees in the nature reserve area, the extent of which is still to be determined.
