Today marked the 176th anniversary of the arrival of Bermuda’s Portuguese community
The more than century-long contributions of Bermuda’s Portuguese community – and their integral role in the island’s growth – were celebrated today.
A proclamation ceremony took place at City Hall, marking the 176th anniversary of the arrival of Bermuda’s Portuguese community.
PLP Senator Mischa Fubler said the day serves as a reminder of the ways the Portuguese continue to strengthen the island.
“On this day in 1849, the first recognized group of Portuguese immigrants arrived from Madeira aboard the ship The Golden Rule. Their courage, hard work and commitment laid the foundation for a proud legacy that continues to shape Bermuda today.
“Many who followed came from the Azores, bringing vital skills and knowledge that helped revive our agriculture. In the mid-19th century, they were instrumental in cultivating the Bermuda sweet onion – a crop that became famous far beyond our shores.
“Today, our Portuguese neighbours, friends and family are represented across every facet of our society – in public service, business, politics, culture and sport – as full and valued members of our community.”
Hugo Pereira, President of the Vasco da Gama Club, added that what began as a small group of settlers has grown into a proud, vibrant community that continues to enrich Bermuda.
“The Portuguese brought with them values that have become part of Bermuda’s fabric – hard work, strong family ties, deep faith, and an enduring sense of community,” Mr Pereira said.
“Through their labour on farms, in construction, in schools – in every corner of Bermudian life – they helped lay the foundation for the island we know today.
“They’ve shown that identity is not about where we come from, but about how we live together, in service and solidarity.
“As we celebrate this 176th anniversary, let us remember those who made the first voyage and those who carry their legacy forward. Let us look to the future, ensuring our younger generations continue to embrace their history and honour the sacrifices of their ancestors.”
The Government of the Azores also recognised the occasion and reaffirmed its commitment to deepening dialogue and cooperation with Bermuda.
