A motocross event at Coney Island has been approved by the government, despite environmental concerns.
The “Pink Sand Scrambling” motocross event received the green light from Minister of Public Works, Lieutenant Colonel David Burch yesterday.
The event, scheduled for December 15th at Coney Island, is organized by a young Bermudian professional with international motocross experience whose goal is to rejuvenate the local motocross scene, connect Bermudian riders with global professionals, and boost Bermuda’s appeal as a sports tourism hub.
While the National Parks Commission conducted a “careful evaluation” of the proposal, it did not come without scrutiny.
The Bermuda Audubon Society, which has representation on the Commission, voiced concerns in October over the event’s environmental impact . They stated, “it is hard to justify the damage to the parkland that would be required for a single motocross event as in the overriding public interest.”
In response, Minister Burch criticized the Audubon Society for going public with their concerns, saying he felt that a line was crossed, especially since the group is already represented in the review process.
Confirming the events approval this week, Minister Burch stated, “while the Audubon Society, represented on the Commission, expressed concerns, we must balance these with opportunities that benefit our community,” end quote.
Following a site visit to Coney Island, Minister Burch said he approved the event with specific environmental safeguards in place. He assured , “environmental stewardship is a priority for [his] Ministry.”
To limit disruption, temporary soil and mulch jumps will be installed and removed immediately after the event. No trees will be affected, and walking trails will be fully restored.
The Minister also confirmed that because no construction is involved, the Planning Department has ruled that no planning permission is required.
This approval will last for one year, similar to an earlier motocross event authorized in 2019, allowing authorities to monitor adherence to protocols and assess the event’s impact.
Minister Burch highlighted Government’s commitment to supporting youth initiatives and promoting a culture of innovation.
He added, “This event represents a significant opportunity to engage our youth and attract international visitors. Our young people are the future of Bermuda, and it is essential that we provide them with the platforms to showcase their talents and drive positive change.”
