A well-known political figure has tossed her hat into the ring for the 2025 General Election.
Renee Webb will run in Constituency 13, Devonshire North Central.
The seat is currently held by Diallo Rabain, the Minister of Education.
Ms Webb is a former Progressive Labour Party Minister and Bermuda’s first female telecommunications, tourism and information technology minister.
She is co-founder of the Independent Candidates Movement in Bermuda, a group that includes former premier Sir John Swan, former PLP MP Rolfe Commissiong, newcomers Cire Bean and environmental advocate Noelle Young.
A pamphlet featuring Webb’s biography and campaign initiatives states: “Renee is standing as an independent candidate as she believes that party politics, while having pluses in Bermuda history, in the last twenty years, have cause much divisiveness, extensive debt, violence and community disruption.
“It is now time to have diverse voices represented in parliament.”
Ms Webb has recently served as the Bermuda Office European Union representative in Brussels and senior advisor assisting with diplomacy and financial consultancy on matters related to the island’s business reputation in Europe.
She served nearly 15 years as an MP and seven years as a member of the Cabinet.
The pamphlet, which is being distributed in Devonshire, states: “Bermudians deserve to have representatives that are willing to stand up without being dictated to their political party and leader without ‘fear or favour’.”
In 2020, the PLP’s Diallo Rabain won the seat with 65% of the vote ahead of the OBA’s Charles Francis Batton Swan 26% and the FDM’s Leighsa Darrell-Augustus with 8% of a total 756 ballots cast.
