Students invited to turn music into visual art while learning new creative techniques and exploring the annual Harvey Cooper Award theme
Middle and high school students are being invited to explore the connection between music and visual art through a workshop hosted by the Harvey Cooper Award in partnership with the Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation on Saturday, June 20.
The hands-on event aims to make art more accessible, encourage creativity and raise awareness of the Harvey Cooper Award competition.
Participants will be asked to respond to the prompt, “What does this song mean to me?” by selecting a song and interpreting its lyrics through a visual art medium. Students are encouraged to arrive with a concept already in mind and will receive guidance from Kaleidoscope instructors to help develop their ideas.
The workshop is open to middle-school students and older and will run from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Following the creative session, family members and friends are invited to attend a garden reception from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., where they can view the completed artwork, meet event organisers and enjoy light refreshments.
The Harvey Cooper Award is Bermuda’s inter-school art competition for students aged 12 to 18. Presented by Margot Kerry Harvey and Travis Cooper, the annual competition provides young artists with an opportunity to explore themed creative work, showcase their talent and compete for prizes.
Organizers say the competition is designed to support arts education, encourage creativity and foster community engagement among Bermuda’s young people.
Founded in 2006, the Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation has worked with more than 11,000 children through its art enrichment programmes. Each year, approximately 1,000 children participate in its activities, with more than two-thirds coming from the public school system.
The foundation partners with every public preschool on the island and a number of public primary schools, offering classes at no cost to schools or students. It also provides bursaries for camps and after-school programmes to help ensure access to arts education.
