Minister Uma Kumaran will meet Premier David Burt and sign the Hamilton II Declaration to protect the Sargasso Sea

The UK Minister for the Overseas Territories, the Caribbean and Global Technology, Uma Kumaran MP, will visit Bermuda from October 18 to 19, 2026, according to a media release from the Government of Bermuda.
His Excellency Andrew Murdoch CMG, Governor of Bermuda, announced the visit. It marks Minister Kumaran’s first trip to Bermuda since her appointment on July 22, 2026.
The release states Minister Kumaran will meet Premier David Burt before signing the Hamilton II Declaration at a ceremony at Government House.
The Declaration is a joint initiative by the Governments of Bermuda and the United Kingdom. According to the release, it aims to build global support for protecting the Sargasso Sea under the United Nations Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Agreement.
The Government says the Declaration provides a voluntary, non-legally binding mechanism. Signatories can express political support for a future management proposal for the Sargasso Sea.
During her visit, Minister Kumaran will also hold bilateral meetings and be briefed on security and defence issues, according to the release. She will take part in a women and girls roundtable discussion on domestic violence, meet local industry representatives and visit the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Science.
Minister Kumaran was elected as the MP for Stratford and Bow in July 2024. Her brief also includes responsibility for the Ocean, the release states.
