American wins sudden-death playoff against Seamus Power on Port Royal’s iconic 16th hole
Austin Smotherman has clinched the Butterfield Bermuda Championship.
The American won a sudden-death playoff on the 16th hole at Port Royal against Seamus Power.
The playoff format was used because high winds prohibited play yesterday.
Smotherman and Power were locked level as they returned to Port Royal’s perilous, ocean-facing par-three 16th.
Through two tense trips to the hole in gusting Atlantic winds, neither man blinked — trading matching pars to keep the contest alive.
The breakthrough finally arrived on the third visit. Power found trouble off the tee to slip to a costly bogey, leaving Smotherman to calmly two-putt for par and seal the biggest victory of his career.
