Bermudians overseas: Wells hits winner for Luton as non-league contingent endure tough night

Bermuda captain nods home decisive effort at Kenilworth Road

Bermuda captain Nahki Wells was on target to guide Luton Town to a 2-1 victory over Barnsley in League One, headlining a busy Tuesday evening of action for Bermudians across the English pyramid.

On an evening where Luton celebrated the club and town’s Black culture and heritage, the Hatters laid the groundwork for their triumph with a clinical first-half display at Kenilworth Road.

Mads Andersen opened the scoring inside two minutes against his former club, powering home a downward header from Jamie Donley’s free-kick. Luton doubled their advantage four minutes before the interval through Wells. Liam Walsh whipped an inswinging free-kick towards the far post, where George Johnston headed across goal for the Bermudian striker to nod home from three yards for his seventh goal of the season. Makenzie Kirk pulled one back for the Tykes after the restart, but Luton held firm to secure all three points.

Away from Bedfordshire, it proved a bruising evening for Bermuda’s overseas contingent in the non-league tiers:

Milan Butterfield and Halesowen Town were dealt a heavy 5-1 defeat away to Racing Club Warwick at Townsend Meadow in the Northern Premier League Midlands Division.

Willie Clemons and Leiston suffered a comprehensive 4-0 loss on the road against Kettering Town in the Southern League Premier Central.

Roger Lee and West Bridgford fell to an identical 4-0 scoreline away to Radford at Selston in the United Counties League Division One.

Daizhari Tucker took charge from the dugout as a 10-man Worcester Raiders side produced a spirited defensive effort, only to be edged out 1-0 by Swindon Supermarine in the Hellenic League Premier Division.
