Investigators found evidence of a group working for Russian secret services in Austria
International news via Reuters:
Austria’s DSN domestic intelligence agency said on Monday it had uncovered an extensive Russian disinformation campaign centred around a Bulgarian national accused of spying and disseminating false information about Ukraine.
The DSN, part of the Austrian interior ministry, said the woman – whom it did not name – had acknowledged working on behalf of Russia, especially in 2022 when Moscow launched its full-blown invasion of Ukraine, to turn public opinion in favour of Russia and against Kyiv.
A spokesperson for the Vienna prosecutor’s office said that despite its request to place the woman in custody, a regional court had released her. The DSN did not immediately respond to a request for comment on her whereabouts or the status of its investigation. The Russian Embassy in Vienna did not immediately reply to an emailed request for comment.
In a search of the woman’s home in an undisclosed location in Austria, the DSN said its investigators had found evidence of a group working for Russian secret services since shortly after the invasion of Ukraine.
It said the group executed an extensive disinformation campaign for German-speaking countries with a focus on Austria. The campaign, it said, included “activities in the media landscape” and offline activity that included graffiti and stickers.
“The spread of false narratives, fake news and manipulative content undermines trust in our institutions and jeopardises social cohesion,” said senior Austrian interior ministry official Joerg Leichtfried.
Citing a spokesperson at the ministry, APA said the woman had also acknowledged having ties to a group working on behalf of Jan Marsalek, a former Wirecard executive who went on the run five years ago after the dramatic implosion of the German payments company.
Marsalek has been named by British police and prosecutors in an investigation into allegations that he directed Russian spy operations across Europe. His whereabouts are unknown and he remains the subject of an Interpol red notice relating to fraud.
The spokesperson cited by APA could not be immediately reached by Reuters.

Businesses in Britain’s huge services sector reported a pickup this month according to a survey

International news via Reuters:
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the government would not be making any changes to its fiscal rules on Wednesday when finance minister Rachel Reeves gives a fiscal update.
Asked on Monday if there would be any change to the fiscal rules, Starmer replied: “No.”
Sterling climbed on Monday ahead of British finance minister Rachel Reeves’ spring budget update later this week and as data earlier in the day showed that business activity in the UK’s huge services sector picked up this month.
The British pound rose 0.45% to $1.2973. It also gained against the euro, with the shared European currency 0.16% lower at 83.625 pence per pound.
Businesses in Britain’s huge services sector reported a pickup this month, according to a survey that offered some comfort to Reeves ahead of a challenging speech on the economy and the public finances this week.
Britain’s Office for Budget Responsibility is expected to announce a sharp downgrade to the UK’s economic growth this year which, along with higher borrowing costs, is likely to force Reeves to cut her plans for spending increases in the coming years.
Reeves said on Sunday she would stick to fiscal rules despite global turmoil, raising the prospect of thousands of public sector job cuts in this week’s budget update which is likely to include further savings.
“The whole point from the UK Treasury of… headlining a lot of the measures that are going to be announced on Wednesday, is engineered so that there won’t be too many surprises for sterling and for UK assets at the spring statement,” said Jane Foley, head of FX strategy at Rabobank.
The Bank of England is watching closely for the impact of the increase in employers’ social security contributions.
Over the past weeks, the British currency’s move has largely been driven by swings in the dollar and the euro given news on tariffs and Germany’s plan for a massive spending splurge.
“But the news coming out of the UK, I think, is still potentially quite significant in terms of the spring statement but it is being pushed into third place,” Foley said.
Markets are also awaiting clarity on U.S. President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariffs on April 2.

Trump administration allowed imports of Brazilian eggs for processing into food products

International news via Reuters:
The U.S. has almost doubled imports of Brazilian eggs once used only for pet food and is considering relaxing regulations for eggs laid by chickens raised for meat, as President Donald Trump’s administration seeks to bring down sky-high prices spiked by bird flu.
While none of the Brazilian or broiler chicken eggs would wind up on grocery shelves, they could be used in processed foods such as cake mixes, ice cream or salad dressing, freeing up more fresh eggs for shoppers. Allowing use of broiler chicken eggs would require changing regulations, and some food safety experts warned that this could risk tainting food products with harmful bacteria.
Nationwide economic strain persists from the virus that has wiped out nearly 170 million chickens, turkeys and other birds since early 2022. Grocery shoppers peruse thinly stocked shelves, restaurants have raised menu prices, and wholesale egg prices surged 53.6% in February before easing a bit in March.
The egg shortage has fueled food inflation even as Trump’s trade disputes have threatened to disrupt supply chains and raise costs for fresh produce and other goods.
In February, the administration announced a $1 billion plan to lower egg prices, which includes helping farmers prevent the spread of the virus and researching vaccine options. The Trump administration is also promoting imports from countries such as Turkey, Brazil and South Korea that typically send few eggs to the U.S., and has asked Europe to send more.
U.S. egg imports from Brazil in February increased by 93% from a year earlier, the Brazilian Animal Protein Association said.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration told Reuters it is reviewing a petition from the National Chicken Council to allow sale for human consumption of eggs laid by chickens that the council’s members raise for meat.
Currently, broiler chicken producers destroy millions of those eggs because they lack sufficient refrigeration to meet an FDA food-safety requirement.
In 2023, the FDA denied a similar request from the council, citing salmonella risk. The chicken industry hopes the agency will now support the effort as aligned with Trump’s goal of slashing unnecessary regulations, said Ashley Peterson, the council’s senior vice president of scientific and regulatory affairs.
“We need more yolks for folks,” said U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson, R-South Dakota, who is co-sponsoring a bill to allow the eggs to be used in food products.
MEAT EGGS DUMPED
Each year, broiler chickens lay about 360 million eggs that are not fit to hatch chicks, according to the council. Some are used to manufacture vaccines, exported or used for other purposes, the petition said, but most are destroyed.
Wayne-Sanderson Farms, a top U.S. producer of chicken meat, probably throws away about 500,000 eggs per week that do not meet specifications, said Mark Burleson, the company’s senior director of veterinary services.
Such eggs were once sold to egg-breaking plants to be pasteurized and used in processed foods. But in 2009, an FDA rule aimed at reducing illness from salmonella required eggs to be refrigerated at 45 degrees Fahrenheit (7 degrees Celsius) starting 36 hours after they are laid.
Chicken producers keep broiler eggs at about 65 degrees and do not have equipment in place to refrigerate them at the lower temperature on FDA’s timetable, the council and farmers said.
The council said the eggs do not threaten public health because they are pasteurized. It said it was not aware of safety issues with them before the 2009 rule.
Food safety experts said insufficient refrigeration may increase pathogens to levels where pasteurization is not fully effective.
“There is a real possibility of trading off increased risk of foodborne illness for some proportion of eggs going into the egg products market,” said Susan Mayne, who was director of FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition when it considered the previous petition.
EGG IMPORTS, LAWS RECONSIDERED
The Trump administration in January allowed imports of Brazilian eggs for processing into food products for people, after they were previously only allowed for use in pet food, according to the Brazilian Animal Protein Association.
Brazilian authorities had already proved that Brazil meets U.S. requirements to export eggs to be processed for human consumption, the association said.
However, Brazil is affected by Newcastle disease, a virus that often kills poultry, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said, and the country cannot supply the U.S. with eggs for sale in grocery stores or pasteurized liquid eggs for human consumption.
States including Nevada and Arizona have paused animal welfare policies that required eggs to come from cage-free hens, in an effort to address tight supplies and high prices.
Nevada in February suspended a 2021 law requiring that all eggs sold in the state come from cage-free hens.
In Arizona, state lawmakers are considering a proposal to repeal a similar rule that was already delayed due to bird flu, said Patrick Bray, executive vice president of the Arizona Farm and Ranch Group, which represents farmers.
“A few years ago, the consumer was demanding a cage-free product,” Bray said. “Now, the consumers’ eyes have been opened up a little bit as we’ve lost hundreds of millions of birds and egg prices are through the roof.”

It listed both assets and estimated liabilities of $100 million to $500 million
International news via Reuters:
Genetic testing firm 23andMe said on Sunday it filed for filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the U.S. to help the $50 million company sell itself and that co-founder and CEO Anne Wojcicki had resigned after multiple failed takeover bids.
23andMe, whose saliva-based test kits help customers learn about their ancestry, had cut about 40%, or 200 employees, of its workforce and stopped development of all its therapies as part of a restructuring program announced in November.
Wojcicki, to be replaced by CFO Joe Selsavage on an interim basis, has been pushing for a buyout since last April but has been rebuffed by 23andMe’s board. She intends to make another bid during the bankruptcy process, she said in a post on X, without giving details.

Her last offer was for $0.41 per share earlier this month, an 84% cut from an offer the previous month since her private equity partner in that bid had walked after the board’s rejection.
The latest offer valued 23andMe at about $11 million, below its current value of $50 million, per LSEG data, and a far cry from its $3.5 billion market capitalization when it went public in 2021.
“After a thorough evaluation of strategic alternatives, we have determined that a court-supervised sale process is the best path forward to maximize the value of the business,” Chair Mark Jensen said in a statement.
23andMe said it secured a debtor-in-possession (DIP) financing commitment for about $35 million and expects to continue operating during the sale process. It did not say if it had any other buyout interest or offers.
It listed both assets and estimated liabilities of $100 million to $500 million.
A month before its restructuring, 23andMe agreed to pay $30 million and give three years of security monitoring to settle a lawsuit accusing it of failing to protect the privacy of 6.9 million customers whose personal information was exposed in a data breach in 2023.

Locals said they were pinning their hopes on visitors returning to the island
International news via Reuters:
Greece’s tourism jewel, Santorini, welcomed its first cruise ship of the year on Sunday after thousands of small earthquakes in February created a state of emergency, forced thousands to flee and had locals fearing the season would be lost.
Millions of tourists flock to Santorini every year, squeezing along its whitewashed cobbled streets to view its famous cliff-top sunset. The increased seismic activity – unprecedented even in a country as quake-prone as Greece – had prompted authorities to shut schools, halt construction and dispatch rescuers to the island.
On Sunday morning, the Celestyal Discovery docked in the sparkling Aegean waters off Santorini with around 1,700 mostly American tourists on board. Celestyal Cruises had taken Santorini off its list earlier this month.

“It’s exciting to know that the island’s open again and we get to visit first,” said 67-year-old Deborah Terry.
Another passenger, Julie Eberly, said she was confident the island was out of danger.
“We trust the tourism board here, so if they said it was safe to come, we came with open arms.”
An island of around 20,000 residents, Santorini took its current shape following one of the largest volcanic eruptions in history around 1600 BC. It welcomes around 2.5 million tourists every year and its economy depends almost exclusively on tourism.
Locals said they were pinning their hopes on visitors returning to the island.
“We all hope that things will return to normal, that people will come back,” said Tassos Kontos, a shop owner. “The cloud seems to be lifting.”

Questions over how such a critical part of Britain’s infrastructure could fail

International news via Reuters:
Britain’s Heathrow defended its decision to shut down operations at Europe’s busiest airport last Friday as the blame game intensified over an 18-hour closure which cost airlines tens of millions of pounds and stranded thousands of passengers.
As questions mounted over how such a critical part of Britain’s infrastructure could fail and whether all Heathrow’s four terminals needed to shut, both National Grid and Heathrow agreed that the failure of the transformer was an unprecedented event.
But the airport was forced to defend its closure after the boss of National Grid told the Financial Times that the electricity transmission network remained capable of providing power to the airport throughout the crisis.
Heathrow said the fire at a nearby substation late on Thursday interrupted its operations, forcing it to shut while it reconfigured systems and switched to power from an alternative substation.

“Hundreds of critical systems across the airport were required to be safely powered down and then safely and systematically rebooted,” a Heathrow spokesperson said.
“Given Heathrow’s size and operational complexity, safely restarting operations after a disruption of this magnitude was a significant challenge.”
John Pettigrew, the CEO of National Grid, said there were two other substations able to provide power to Heathrow, showing that the grid was resilient.
“Two substations were always available for the distribution network companies and Heathrow to take power,” he told the FT.
While airlines such as British Airways, the worse affected, add up the bill for the closure, the government and Heathrow have both commissioned reviews into what happened.
“It’s really important that we do learn the lessons from this, and that’s why I think those two reviews…are going to be really critical,” Transport Minister Heidi Alexander told Sky News on Monday.
Asked on LBC Radio about whether she had confidence in Heathrow’s CEO Thomas Woldbye, Alexander said she wanted to see the results of the reviews.
Heathrow is a private company owned by French investment group Ardian, Qatar Investment Authority and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund plus others.

Trump has made U.S. annexation of Greenland a major talking point
International news via Reuters:
Greenlandic leaders criticised a planned trip this week by a high-profile U.S. delegation to the semi-autonomous Danish territory that President Donald Trump has suggested the United States should annex.
The delegation, which will visit a U.S. military base and watch a dogsled race, will be led by Usha Vance, wife of Vice President JD Vance, and include White House National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright.
Trump has made U.S. annexation of Greenland a major talking point since his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., paid a private visit to the vast, mineral-rich island in January.
Greenland’s outgoing Prime Minister Mute Egede called the delegation’s visit, which runs from Thursday to Saturday, a “provocation” and said his caretaker government would not meet with it.
“Until recently, we could trust the Americans, who were our allies and friends, and with whom we enjoyed working closely,” Egede told local newspaper Sermitsiaq. “But that time is over.”
The Greenlandic government, Naalakkersuisut, is currently in a caretaker phase following a March 11 parliamentary election won by the Democrats, a pro-business party that favours a slow approach to independence from Denmark.
Jens-Frederik Nielsen, leader of the Democrats, called for political unity and criticized the timing of the visit during coalition talks with municipal elections due next week.
“We must not be forced into a power game that we ourselves have not chosen to be a part of,” Nielsen said on Monday.
Brian Hughes, spokesman for the White House National Security Council, said the visit aims to “build on partnerships that respects Greenland’s self-determination and advances economic cooperation”.
“This is a visit to learn about Greenland, its culture, history, and people and to attend a dogsled race the United States is proud to sponsor, plain and simple,” Hughes said.
HEAVY SECURITY
Two U.S. Hercules military transport planes arrived in Greenland’s capital Nuuk late on Sunday, carrying security personnel and bulletproof vehicles, Sermitsiaq reported.
Around 60 police officers from Denmark also arrived in Nuuk on Sunday, state broadcaster KNR reported.
Waltz and Wright plan to visit the Pituffik space base, the U.S. military base located along the shortest route from Europe to North America, vital for its ballistic missile warning system.
They will then join Vance to visit historical sites and attend the national dogsled race.
Vance said in a video posted by the U.S. consulate in Greenland that her visit aimed to “celebrate the long history of mutual respect and cooperation between our nations”.

Trump, who first floated the idea of buying Greenland in 2019, has renewed his calls for the U.S. to take over the island since his return to the White House in January, and he has not ruled out using force to achieve this aim.
Greenland is rich in raw materials, including minerals critical to advance new technologies.
The governments of both Greenland and Denmark have voiced opposition to any U.S. takeover.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said in a written comment reacting to news of the U.S. delegation’s visit that “this is something we take seriously”.
She said Denmark wanted cooperation with the United States, a NATO ally, but on the basis of “the fundamental rules of sovereignty”, adding that Copenhagen and Greenland’s future government would both be involved in any talks with the U.S. regarding the island.
