Greenland sees tourism boost following Trump’s attention and new airport

Hopes of new airports bolstering tourism and mining industries to diversify the economy

International news via Reuters:

Ivik Knudssen-Ostermann, whose company runs boat tours to see Greenland’s glittering blue icebergs, says his bank has told him to expand ahead of an expected influx of tourists after U.S. President Donald Trump put the island in the global spotlight.

Trump’s comments, coupled with the opening of a new international airport in the capital Nuuk, have already boosted arrivals and more are expected.

“Already now, we are getting many more bookings than we have received earlier, especially because of a man with the last name of Trump. He has really put Greenland on the map once again,” Knudsen-Ostermann, operator of Greenland Cruises, said, standing on the dock of an ice-packed harbour.

Greenland became the focus of international attention in January when Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., arrived at the newly opened Nuuk airport.

Since then, the U.S. president has doubled down on his pledge to make the Arctic island part of the United States, as he eyes its vast wealth of rare earth minerals critical for high-tech industries.

Greenland is hoping new airports will bolster its tourism and mining industries to diversify the economy, which is currently reliant on fishing for 95% of its exports.

The country’s vast ice sheet, glaciers, deep fjords and abundance of marine life, including whales, are the key attractions, while pride in the local Inuit culture is also growing.

The opening of the airport in Nuuk in November last year has made travel to the island easier. United Airlines is set to begin direct flights from New York to Nuuk in June, replacing the previous route which required tourists to fly via Copenhagen and transit at the former U.S. military base Kangerlussuaq.

Ilulissat, Greenland’s main tourist hub known for its UNESCO-listed ice fjord, is also due to open a new international airport in 2026, while another international airport is under construction in Qaqortoq in southern Greenland.

“We will see quite a significant growth this summer already,” said Jens Lauridsen, CEO of Greenland Airports.

While the bank is telling Knudsen-Ostermann to get more boats and more people, he says he is cautious.

“I want to see what the new airport brings us, what 2025 brings us. We don’t know the future, so I’m holding back a little,” he said.

Statistics Greenland reported a 14% year-on-year rise in the number of passengers on international flights to Greenland in January. The number of hotel nights has seen a steady increase over the past decade, with 355,000 recorded last year, up from 210,000 in 2014, it said.

Three-quarters of tourism operators reported an increase in bookings in the three months following the opening of Nuuk’s new airport, according to Visit Greenland.

Lars Ipland, a Danish tourist in Nuuk, said Greenland was one of the last parts of the world he hadn’t seen.

“It’s a part of Denmark, so I thought I have to see it. Now with all the attention, you don’t know what’s happening next week or if it’s another flag up here or whatever they decide to do.”

Namibia’s new president vows to diversify economy, tackle joblessness

Namibia has seen relatively strong economic growth in recent years

International news via Reuters:

Namibia’s newly elected President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah pledged on Friday to boost investments in the agricultural sector and diversify the resource-focused economy in an attempt to address high unemployment rates.

Nandi-Ndaitwah, 72, became Namibia’s first female president after her SWAPO party, which has governed the nation of around 3 million people for more than three decades, secured victory in both the presidential and parliamentary elections in November.

Namibia has seen relatively strong economic growth in recent years, primarily due to investments in oil, gas and green hydrogen. But World Bank data indicate the southern African nation ranks second highest globally for income inequality.

“We are going to increase investments in the agriculture sector to increase output and meet domestic food requirements,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said in her inaugural speech after being sworn in as president.

She also committed to diversifying the economy, enabling citizens to “derive maximum benefits from our country’s natural resources, through value addition”.

Diversification, she added, would “create jobs to take care of the unemployed, of which the majority are the youth.”

She also stressed the need for maintaining high ethical standards among public servants and combating corruption.

SWAPO’s public support has fallen in the last decade due to dissatisfaction with high unemployment, inequality and graft allegations. The party secured 57% of the votes in November’s presidential race, compared to 87% in the 2014 election.

Nandi-Ndaitwah’s inauguration was attended by dignitaries including seven incumbent and nine former African presidents.

Last month, Namibia’s Supreme Court dismissed a challenge against the presidential election brought by opposition parties, which said the vote was flawed and potentially invalid due to an extension of voting for several days, among other issues.

Failed New Mexico candidate found guilty in plot to shoot Democratic officials

Pena faces life in prison. A sentencing date is not yet set.

International news via Reuters:

A New Mexico jury found a failed Republican candidate for the state House of Representatives guilty on all counts related to a series of drive-by shootings at the homes of Democratic officials in Albuquerque, prosecutors said on Thursday.

Solomon Pena was convicted on 13 felony charges including three counts of solicitation to commit a crime of violence.

Election conspiracy theories drove Pena to recruit others to shoot at the Albuquerque homes in a bid to wound or kill the Democratic officials in 2022 and 2023, police said.

No one was hurt in the attacks that came at a time of high political polarization and fear of violence in the country.

Pena, described as a “radical right election denier” by officials, had falsely alleged fraud in his defeat in a House race.

Prosecutors had accused him of hiring gunmen for a shooting spree at the homes of the Democratic officials after he visited them to dispute his 2022 election defeat.

Two men who said they were hired by Pena for the attacks pleaded guilty more than a year ago.

Pena faces life in prison. A sentencing date is not yet set.

The officials who were attacked issued a joint statement saying “the verdict serves as a reminder that threats or acts of violence against anyone in this community will not be tolerated.”

Pena’s lawyer told NBC News that his client was not linked to the shootings and called the verdict a “travesty.” The lawyer said Pena had not hired anyone to shoot at the Democrats and said he was wrongly blamed.

Deep dive: Heathrow fire

Airlines facing prospect of a financial hit costing tens of millions of pounds

International news via Reuters:

Britain’s Heathrow Airport was shut on Friday after a huge fire at a nearby substation knocked out its power, stranding passengers around the world and angering airlines who questioned how such crucial infrastructure could fail.

Huge orange flames and plumes of black smoke shot into the sky around 2300 GMT on Thursday as a blaze engulfed the substation, cutting the power supply and back-up system for Europe’s busiest and the world’s fifth-busiest airport.

Police said while there was no indication of foul play they retained an open mind and counter-terrorism officers would lead the inquiries given the critical nature of the infrastructure, and their capabilities.

Airline experts said the last time European airports experienced disruption on such a large scale was the 2010 Icelandic ash cloud that grounded some 100,000 flights.

The industry is now facing the prospect of a financial hit costing tens of millions of pounds, and a likely fight over who should pay.

“You would think they would have significant back-up power,” one top executive from a European airline told Reuters.

The fire brigade said the cause of the fire was not known, but that 25,000 litres of cooling oil in the substation’s transformer had caught fire. It had brought the blaze under control by the early morning with the transformer doused in white firefighting foam.

Heathrow had been due to handle 1,351 flights on Friday, flying up to 291,000 passengers. The closure forced flights to divert to other airports in Britain and across Europe, while many long-haul flights returned to their point of departure.

Passengers stranded in London and facing the prospect of days of disruptions were scrambling to make alternate travel arrangements.

“When we first came here, (it was) very exciting and hopeful,” said Beau Mahr, 21 from the U.S. state of Iowa. “Now that we have to wait, it’s kind of stressful.”

Industry experts warned that some passengers forced to land in Europe may have to stay in transit lounges if they lack the paperwork to leave the airport.

Global flight schedules will also be affected, as aircraft and crews will now be out of position, forcing carriers to rapidly reconfigure their networks.

Prices at hotels around Heathrow jumped, with booking sites offering rooms for 500 pounds ($645), roughly five times the normal price levels.

“Passengers are advised not to travel to the airport and should contact their airline for further information,” Heathrow said, adding that the airport would be shut until midnight on Friday. “We apologise for the inconvenience.”

BACK-UP POWER

Airline executives, electrical engineers and passengers questioned how Britain’s gateway to the world could be forced to close by one fire, however large.

Heathrow, and London’s other major airports, have been hit by other outages in recent years, most recently by an automated gate failure and an air traffic system meltdown, both in 2023.

Pictures on social media showed the airport terminals in near darkness during the night, and British energy minister Ed Miliband said it appeared that the “catastrophic” fire had prevented the power back-up system from working.

Willie Walsh, the head of the global airlines body IATA and a former head of British Airways, said Heathrow had once again let passengers down.

“How is it that critical infrastructure – of national and global importance – is totally dependent on a single power source without an alternative,” he said. “If that is the case – as it seems – then it is a clear planning failure by the airport.”

Experts in power supply said the type of fire that erupted overnight was extremely rare, but they added that there should be sufficient alternative supplies to get everyone back online quickly.

“We can be fairly confident they will be able to restore by tomorrow,” said Nicholas Rigby, a commercial engineer at NRG Management Consultancy.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he was receiving regular updates on the incident.

MIDNIGHT FLIGHT SCRAMBLE

As the scale of the outage became clear, flights operated by airlines including jetBlue, American Airlines, Air Canada, Air India, Delta Air, Qantas, United Airlines, IAG-owned British Airways and Virgin were diverted or returned to their origin airports in the middle of the night, according to data from flight analytics firm Cirium.

Qantas Airways sent its flight from Perth to Paris, a United Airlines New York flight headed to Shannon, Ireland, and a United Airlines flight from San Francisco was due to land in Washington, D.C. rather than London.

“Heathrow is one of the major hubs of the world,” said Ian Petchenik, spokesman for flight tracking website FlightRadar24. “This is going to disrupt airlines’ operations around the world.”

British Airways, the biggest carrier at Heathrow, had 341 flights scheduled to land there on Friday.

Shares in its parent company IAG were hit, along with shares in other airlines. EasyJet and Ryanair put on extra flights or used larger planes to help tackle the backlog.

A Heathrow spokesperson said there was no clarity on when power would be restored, and they expected significant disruption over the coming days.

The airport’s owners include France’s Ardian, the Qatar Investment Authority and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, plus other investors in Australia, China and Spain.

On the ground in London, thousands of properties were also without power. Businesses in the area include data centres and logistics warehouses.

Heathrow Airport closed by huge fire at power station, global flight schedules disrupted

LONDON (Reuters) – Britain’s Heathrow Airport was shut on Friday after a huge fire at a nearby electrical substation wiped out its power, disrupting flight schedules around the world.

Around 70 firefighters were tackling the blaze in the west of London, which led to a mass power outage at Heathrow, Europe’s busiest and the world’s fifth-busiest airport, and also knocked out its back-up power system.

Huge orange flames and plumes of black smoke could be seen shooting into the sky. Around 150 people were evacuated from nearby buildings and thousands of properties were without power.

The fire brigade said the cause of the fire was not known.

“Our firefighters are working tirelessly to bring the fire in #Hayes under control,” the service said in an update on X at 05:48 GMT. “Part of a transformer remains alight.

“As we head into the morning, disruption is expected to increase, and we urge people to avoid the area wherever possible.”

Heathrow said the airport, which was due to handle 1,351 flights during the day, flying up to 291,000 passengers, would stay closed until midnight as it was experiencing a significant power outage.

“Passengers are advised not to travel to the airport and should contact their airline for further information,” it said. “We apologise for the inconvenience.”

The fire, which was reported just after 11 p.m. (2300 GMT) on Thursday, forced planes to divert to airports across Britain and Europe, while many long-haul flights simply returned to their point of departure.

Energy Minister Ed Miliband said the “catastrophic” fire had prevented the power back up system from working and that engineers were working to deploy a third back-up mechanism. He said it was too soon to say what had caused the blaze.

“There was a back-up generator but that was also affected by the fire which gives a sense of how unusual and unprecedented it was,” he told Sky News.

“With any incident like this we will want to understand why it happened and what if any lessons it has for our infrastructure.”

Industry experts warned that some passengers forced to land in Europe may have to stay in transit lounges if they lack the visa paperwork to leave the airport. Global flight schedules will also be affected more broadly as many aircraft will now be out of position.

“Heathrow is one of the major hubs of the world,” said Ian Petchenik, spokesman for FlightRadar24. “This is going to disrupt airlines’ operations around the world.”

British Airways, the biggest carrier at Heathrow, had 341 flights scheduled to land at Heathrow on Friday.

CHAOTIC DAYS AHEAD

According to flight tracking website FlightRadar24, at least 120 inbound flights to Heathrow were having to divert to other airports in the early morning.

Qantas Airways sent its flight from Perth to Paris, a United Airlines New York flight headed to Shannon, Ireland and a United Airlines flight from San Francisco was due to land in Washington, D.C. rather than London.

Some flights from the U.S. were turning around mid-air and returning to their point of departure.

Police cordoned off the roads around the airport, local train routes were stopped and before 7 a.m. around 40 people were seen walking away from Terminal 5 with their luggage.

Travel experts said the disruption would extend far beyond Heathrow.

Airlines’ carefully choreographed networks depend on airplanes and crews being in specific locations at specific times. Dozens of air carriers will have to hurriedly reconfigure their networks to move planes and crews around.

“The other question is, ‘What will airlines do to deal with the backlog of passengers?'”, said travel industry analyst Henry Harteveldt with Atmosphere Research Group. “It’s going to be a chaotic couple of days.”

Some passengers turned to social media. Adrian Spender, who works at British retailer Tesco, said in a post on X that he was on an Airbus A380 that had been headed for Heathrow.

“#Heathrow no idea where we are going yet. Currently over Austria.”

Heathrow, and London’s other major airports, have been hit by outages in the past in recent years, most recently by an automated gate failure and an air traffic system meltdown, both in 2023.

A Heathrow spokesperson told Reuters in an email that there was no clarity on when power would be restored, and they expected significant disruption over the coming days.

On the ground in London, a number of homes and businesses were without power. “Firefighters have led 29 people to safety from neighbouring properties, and as a precaution, a 200-metre cordon has been established, with around 150 people evacuated,” the fire brigade said.

Soccer-It’s time for Salah to win Africa Cup of Nations, says Egypt coach

International news via Reuters:

The time has come for Mohamed Salah to lift the Africa Cup of Nations, says Egypt coach Hossam Hassan, who aims to lead the country to the 2026 World Cup just like he did as a player.

Hassan won the Nations Cup three times as a player and is desperate to claim the title as a coach. He can call on a distinguished squad, including Liverpool’s Salah and fellow forward Omar Marmoush, who joined Manchester City in January.

Salah, 32, has twice finished runner-up in the continental tournament – in 2017 and 2021 – but has yet to win the title.

“It’s time for Salah to lift the Africa Cup of Nations trophy, and he deserves it. The competition is tough, but we are capable of winning it,” Hassan told Reuters in an interview.

“He is a great player and deserves his current status. Having him with us is wonderful. Everyone in the team, led by Salah, is doing their best to fulfill the hopes and ambitions of the Egyptian people,” the former striker added.

Egypt have been drawn in Group B with South Africa, Angola and Zimbabwe at the Dec. 21 to Jan. 18 tournament in Morocco

Hassan declined to choose between winning the Nations Cup and qualifying for the World Cup, having tasted both in his storied career as his country’s most prolific striker.

It was his goal that secured Egypt’s spot in the 1990 World Cup and now, as a coach, he hopes to match that‮ ‬achievement.

“The two goals are extremely important. Winning the Africa Cup of Nations after a long absence (would be) fantastic for the national team, especially for this outstanding generation that deserves it,” he said.

“Also, reaching the World Cup and advancing to the later stages would be even more wonderful and would highlight the performance of this generation and the coaching staff and, of course, bring joy to the Egyptian fans who deserve so much”.

Egypt drew with Ireland and Netherlands at Italia 90 but failed to progress after a 1-0 defeat by eventual semi-finalists England. They also made it to Russia in 2018 but lost all three group games against the hosts, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.

Egypt have a four-point lead atop African World Cup qualifying Group A with six rounds of matches left. The group winners qualify directly for next year’s finals.

MOST CONTRIBUTIONS

Salah has scored or set up 44 goals this season for Liverpool, making him the player with the most goal contributions in the five major European leagues followed by Marmoush with 28, most of which came with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Salah has helped Liverpool establish a 12-point lead atop the Premier League this season with nine games remaining.

Hassan is placing his trust in Egypt’s captain and 26-year-old Marmoush, who is regarded as Salah’s successor.

“The presence of Salah and Marmoush in the biggest clubs in the world and their impressive performances is fantastic and gives the national team greater strength,” he said.

“Of course, they will face significant challenges in the Africa Cup of Nations due to the pressure, but they have become more experienced and skilled in handling these pressures.

“Marmoush is a talented player. He has put in a lot of effort throughout his career in Europe, which he truly deserved for moving to one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“I’m confident in his success in the coming period and he scored a hat-trick against Newcastle United (in the Premier League in February), which gave him even more confidence”.

Salah is on the brink of becoming Egypt’s all-time leading scorer with his 57 goals close to his coach’s record 68.

The 58-year-old Hassan would be delighted to be knocked off top spot however.

“I wish Salah the best of luck because it benefits the national team. I hope he achieves even more. It makes me happy,” he said.

Hassan added that he will back Salah in any decision he makes regarding his future at club level, as the forward’s Liverpool contract is due to run out at the end of the season.

Salah has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia.

“I know it’s not easy, but he is a great player, and he will handle this situation well. I wish him success wherever he goes, as he is the best ambassador for Egypt and the Egyptians.”
