VPN users put on cyber security alert against hackers

According to the government, a global credential compromise campaign, widely referred to as “FortiBleed”, is actively targeting these devices that utilise firewalls and VPNs

The Ministry of National Security, acting on advice from the National Cybersecurity Unit (NCU), is issuing this alert to all organisations and individuals in Bermuda that operate Fortinet firewall or VPN devices.

A global credential compromise campaign, widely referred to as “FortiBleed”, is actively targeting these devices. Organisations that have not taken protective action are at risk of unauthorised access to their networks.

The Acting Minister of National Security, the Hon. Jaché Adams, JP, MP, said: “The security of Bermuda’s digital infrastructure is a matter of national importance.

“This campaign is not a theoretical risk. It is an active threat that has already compromised tens of thousands of devices globally. I urge every organisation in Bermuda operating Fortinet equipment to treat this as a priority and act on the guidance provided today without delay.”

FortiBleed is a large-scale credential harvesting campaign targeting Fortinet FortiGate firewalls and SSL VPN gateways exposed to the internet. Security researchers estimate that between 74,000 and 86,000 devices have been affected globally.

Attackers are exploiting previously compromised credentials, password reuse, and automated brute-force tools to gain unauthorised access.

Fortinet has confirmed that this is not a new software vulnerability. The activity stems from weak password practices, absent multi-factor authentication, and legacy password storage methods that persist on some devices even after firmware updates.

Once inside a device, attackers can intercept network traffic, create backdoor accounts, modify configurations, and move laterally into connected systems, including Active Directory environments.

The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and Fortinet’s own Product Security Incident Response Team have both issued formal guidance urging immediate action.

Any organisation or individual in Bermuda operating a Fortinet FortiGate firewall or SSL VPN gateway, whether in the public sector, private sector, financial services, telecommunications, healthcare, or any other sector, should treat this alert as directly relevant and act immediately.

Fortinet is proactively contacting customers whose devices have been identified as potentially compromised.

Organisations that have not received direct notification should not assume their devices are unaffected. All Fortinet device operators are advised to take the following precautionary steps.

The NCU strongly advises all Fortinet device operators in Bermuda to carry out the following steps immediately:

  • Terminate all active sessions.
  • Reset all credentials.
  • Upgrade to a supported firmware version.
  • Enable Multi-Factor Authentication.
  • Audit your configuration.
  • Review logs for signs of compromise.
  • Restrict management access.

If indicators of compromise are identified, including unrecognised accounts, unauthorised configuration changes or suspicious authentication activity, the affected device should be treated as compromised. Operators should not rely solely on resetting credentials before resuming operations.

Organisations are urged to follow Fortinet’s incident recovery process, isolate the device from their network, and assess the extent of any lateral movement into connected systems.

Fortinet’s FortiGuard Incident Response team is available to assist affected organisations directly. Contact details are available through the Fortinet resources listed below.

Affected parties in Bermuda requiring guidance or wishing to report a suspected incident should contact the NCU at cybersecurity@gov.bm.

Full technical guidance, including Fortinet’s PSIRT analysis and step-by-step hardening instructions, is available from Fortinet at fortinet.com/blog/psirt-blogs/analysis-of-reported-credential-compromise-of-fortigate-devices.

Organisations that require direct incident investigation support from Fortinet may request a scoping call through the FortiGuard Incident Response service at fortinet.com/corporate/about-us/contact-us/experienced-a-breach.

An American Airlines flight 308 destined for Bermuda aborted its takeoff in Miami Saturday evening after a jet entered the same runway, according to ABC News.

According to the audio recording, there appears to have been confusion when the air controller told the pilot of the business jet, “You just crossed an active runway.”

The pilot is heard responding, “You just told me to cross the runway, sir.”

Air controller said, “No, we said Amerijet 461.”

The incident, which is now under investigation by the F.A.A. happened around 7pm local time.

A spokesperson for American Airlines told media, “We appreciate the quick actions of our crew members and thank our customers for their understanding.”

ABC reported that the flight safely landed in Bermuda following the incident.

A spokesperson for Skyport Bermuda confirmed, “American Airlines flight AA308, operating from Miami to Bermuda on Friday, June 26, landed safely with no disruption to local operations.”

Bermuda Red Cross launches appeal for Venezuela earthquake disaster

The Bermuda Red Cross said funds raised will support the Venezuelan Red Cross in assisting 300,000 people seriously hit by the earthquakes that struck last Wednesday

Full news statement from the Bermuda Red Cross:

Bermuda Red Cross is launching a disaster cash appeal for those affected from the earthquake in Venezuela.

Fewer than 48 hours after two strong earthquakes struck Venezuela, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has launched an Emergency Appeal for 50 million Swiss francs (US$61,842,900). Money raised will support the Venezuelan Red Cross in assisting 300,000 people seriously hit. The initial focus will be on La Guaira and Greater Caracas, where the destruction is most severe.

“These quakes have been devastating for the people of Venezuela,” said Jagan Chapagain, Secretary General of the IFRC. “Tens of thousands of lives have changed forever. IFRC and Venezuelan Red Cross teams responded immediately; the value of having local teams, permanently in place, has already become clear. But a disaster of this scale cannot rest on local shoulders alone. We call on the international community to support our emergency appeal, providing support over coming days and for the long road ahead.”

There has been widespread destruction to homes and businesses, with reports of structural collapses in parts of Caracas and across several states. Critical infrastructure has also suffered, with damage to airports, hospitals, transport and other public services. Power and phone lines have been disrupted isolating some of the affected communities.

While the situation in Venezuela following the earthquake is still developing, the humanitarian needs are serious and urgent. The Venezuelan Red Cross Society (VRCS) responded immediately. Their efforts so far have included:

· Emergency medical response: getting ambulances into the Capital District to help treat those in need of urgent medical care and to transport injured people to hospital.

· Search and rescue: specialist teams are supporting rescue efforts in areas where buildings and infrastructure have totally collapsed. Their focus is on saving as many lives as possible in these critical early stages.

· Preparing shelter facilities: making sure people whose homes are no longer safe to stay in have somewhere they can rest, with access to essential items, advice and emotional support.

· Ongoing crisis assessment: working with local authorities and colleagues of the International Federation of the Red Cross, VRCS will continue to assess the growing humanitarian needs, so that they can get support to those that need it, fast.

With communications disrupted and many families separated and because large Venezuelan communities live across the region, National Red Cross Societies in ten countries (Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, Guatemala, Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras, Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina) have activated restoring family links services to help people find news of their relatives.

Op-ed: Shadow Housing Minister criticises lack of RFP

Shadow Minister for the Economy, Labour & Housing, Michael Fahy asks why the government had no RFP process for the 84 houses to be built across three different sites for $64million

Full statement from the opposition One Bermuda Alliance:

In the House of Assembly today (26 June) the Minister of Housing, the Hon. Zane DeSilva was forced to admit under questioning from the Shadow Minister for the Economy, Labour & Housing, the Hon. Michael Fahy, that there has been no RFP process for the 84 houses to be built across three different sites for $64million.

Mr Fahy pointed out that this amounted to almost $763k per modular home.

He asked if the monies to be spent per unit was for all extras from transporting the precast unit pieces, the landscaping, fit outs, and all excavations.

Minister DeSilva confirmed that the price was “key in hand.” In further questioning the Minister doubled down and said there would be no overruns.

Mr Fahy said:  “That is a very serious undertaking – no cost overruns. We will watch this space carefully and hold the Minister to account on this statement. We all know the kind of cost overruns that have happened with capital projects.

“More importantly, whilst it is absolutely imperative to get Bermudians housed, it cannot be done without processes being open to the sunshine of public scrutiny. Why was the contract apparently sole sourced? What other entities made proposals? What local contractors will be hired for all the extras?”

Mr Fahy also questioned the consultation process. He noted the affordable housing plan was released on 5 May, contracts signed six weeks later and the ground due to be broken in mid-August.

He said, “It has the appearance that contracts were in process long before the consultation process began. Our job as Opposition is to ask questions and hold Ministers accountable. The Minister gave an undertaking to bring to the House of Assembly the full process followed in respect of the selection of Coastal Precast systems. We look forward to seeing this.”

DeSilva slams OBA over halted housing plans

Housing Minister Zane DeSilva has criticised the opposition OBA for stopping a housing project at a Dockyard site that is now pegged for affordable housing, saying “they found money for the America’s Cup”

“$100 million for the America’s Cup… but you couldn’t build homes for our people…”

Housing and Municipalities Minister Zane DeSilva today affirmed that affordable housing projects in St David’s and Sandy’s have been financed.

He also told the House of Assembly that one of those sites, Victoria Row in Dockyard, had a 100-home project underway when the OBA took power in 2012, at which time it was curtailed with 20 homes complete.

Dr Douglas De Couto, Shadow Finance Minister, hit back by citing a 2012 budget deficit of $127 million prior to capital spending.

“Would the Minister have preferred that housing have been built, or that civil servants not have been paid?”, he countered.

Miniter DeSilva responded, “this government cares about the people of the country, and we will do both.”

Gary Foster Skelton questioned the Housing Minister afterwards, citing the economic conditions of 2012 compared to now, particularly in the International Business sector.

The Minister doubled down on his position, saying that “they say that our debt was too high, but a couple of months later they find $100 million for the America’s Cup.”

Rattlesnake sighting reported in Southampton

The Ministry of Public Works and Environment advises that it has received a credible report of a possible rattlesnake sighting in the area of Gibbs Hill Road, Southampton

Overseas photo

Government of Bermuda Press Release:

The Ministry of Public Works and Environment advises that it has received a credible report of a possible rattlesnake sighting in the area of Gibbs Hill Road, Southampton, on 26 June 2026.

Officers from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo are actively investigating the report.

At this time, there have been no injuries reported. Authorities are treating the matter with the utmost seriousness while efforts continue to locate and safely remove the animal.

Anyone who believes they have seen the snake should immediately contact 911. Members of the public are urged not to approach, capture or harm the animal.

If it can be done from a safe distance, maintain visual contact with the snake until authorities arrive. Sudden movements that may provoke the snake should be avoided.

Residents and members of the public in the vicinity of Gibbs Hill Road are advised to avoid entering dense vegetation or reaching into areas where visibility is limited, such as beneath boards, inside pipes or other enclosed spaces, where the snake may be concealed.

As a precaution, nearby residents, first responders, and healthcare services are being notified. Residents in the surrounding area are encouraged to remain vigilant, and pet owners should keep pets indoors or under close supervision until further notice becomes available.

The Ministry is coordinating closely with all relevant agencies to ensure an appropriate and timely response. The public’s cooperation is appreciated, and further updates will be provided as additional information becomes available.

World stocks edge lower as tech selloff drags markets

On Wall Street, all three indexes were trading lower in choppy trading as losses in industrials, technology and energy offset gains in healthcare and real estate stocks

International News via Reuters:

Global equity markets edged lower on Friday, set for a weekly decline as investors kept taking profits on high-flying technology and chip stocks, while crude oil prices slumped as more tankers left the Strait of Hormuz.

On Wall Street, all three indexes were trading lower in choppy trading as losses in industrials, technology and energy offset gains in healthcare and real estate stocks.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq were on track for a weekly loss while the Dow was headed for a weekly gain.

Chip stocks were down 5%, set for a weekly loss of 7.7%, the largest weekly decline since March.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.11%, the S&P 500 lost 0.15% and the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.29%.

“It’s a combination of a needed and healthy period of consolidation following the historic run since March and a dramatic rotation from tech and everything else,” said Mark Hackett, chief market strategist at Nationwide.

“Overall, the selloff is modest when put in context, and I expect we resume higher once this period of consolidation concludes since investors still have a buy-the-dip mentality and fundamentals remain solid.”

Price hikes announced by Apple had fuelled worries about structural inflation from massive spending by AI giants and limited availability of key tech components.

European stocks fell nearly 0.7%, with technology stocks shedding 1.17%.

MSCI’s index of Asian stocks outside Japan fell nearly 3%. South Korea’s KOSPI lost as much as 5.8%.

MSCI’s gauge of stocks across the globe fell 0.62% and was set for a 2.2% loss for the week.

OIL PRICES FALL SHARPLY

Crude prices tumbled on easing supply concerns as more oil tankers exited the Strait of Hormuz, even though a cargo vessel was hit near Oman on Thursday.

Refining giant Saudi Aramco resumed oil loading on Friday at its Ras Tanura terminal in the Gulf after a nearly four-month halt, shipping data from LSEG showed.

Brent crude futures fell 4.34% to settle at $72 per barrel.

YEN WEAKNESS

The yen teetered near its weakest level in 40 years against the dollar at 161.71, beyond the 160 level that many see as a line in the sand for Japanese authorities.

The euro was up 0.14% at $1.1385 but was set for a second consecutive weekly loss against the dollar.

The dollar index eased but was headed for a second straight weekly gain against peers. The index fell 0.16% to 101.35.

In bonds, benchmark Treasury yields were lower in Europe and the U.S. The yield on benchmark U.S. 10-year notes fell 1.95 basis points to 4.373% while the yield on the benchmark German 10-year Bunds fell 0.53 basis points to 2.848%.

Oil prices dive as more tankers move through Strait of Hormuz

Brent crude futures settled at $71.99 a barrel, down $3.27, or 4.34%

International News via Reuters:

Crude prices fell by more than 3% on Friday, on course for steep weekly losses, as oil tankers kept exiting the Strait of Hormuz, easing supply concerns the day after a cargo vessel was hit near Oman.

Brent crude futures settled at $71.99 a barrel, down $3.27, or 4.34%. U.S. West Texas Intermediate finished at $69.23 a barrel, down $2.69 or 3.74%.

Since the market closed last Thursday, the Brent benchmark fell 10.86%, while WTI fell 9.62% for the week. The market closed for a public holiday last Friday.

“There is a growing sense that oil is going to keep moving through the Strait of Hormuz,” said Phil Flynn, senior analyst with Price Futures Group.

Prior to the agreement on 60-day ceasefire, markets worried supplies would fall short of demand, but those fears seem to be passing.

“The predominant view, it appears, remains one of imminent oversupply,” said PVM analyst Tamas Varga.

“We’re going to get a flood of oil,” Flynn said. “I think we’re going to see a huge flood of products.”

Oil giant Saudi Aramco resumed oil loading on Friday at its Ras Tanura terminal in the Gulf after a nearly four-month halt, shipping data from LSEG showed.

Two very large crude carriers (VLCCs), which can load cargoes of 2 million barrels, took on crude at the terminal while another waited nearby, the data showed.

“There is a general selloff as the market reacts to the increased flows exiting the Strait of Hormuz and China not yet picking up crude demand,” said June Goh, senior oil market analyst at Sparta Commodities.

UNKNOWN PROJECTILE HITS VESSEL

On Thursday, both benchmark contracts jumped more than 2% after a cargo vessel was hit by an unknown projectile near Oman, prompting the U.N.’s shipping agency to suspend its voluntary evacuation scheme.

Two U.S. officials told Reuters that Iran fired on the cargo ship as it attempted to pass through the strait. Iranian authorities said the security of vessels passing outside designated Hormuz routes is not guaranteed.

On Friday, Iran reasserted its right to control shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and warned Gulf states against siding with the U.S.

Data on Thursday showed that crude shipments through the strait rose this week to their highest since the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran began at the end of February.

Despite the ceasefire deal that reopened the waterway, overall traffic is far below the pre-war daily average.

Meanwhile, Russian authorities are considering a diesel export ban for several months, state news agency TASS said on Friday.

Russia, a major diesel exporter, faces fuel supply issues after Ukrainian drone attacks extensively damaged its oil refineries and other energy infrastructure.
