PLP responds to King’s election as OBA leader

Party says Bermuda needs steady leadership focused on families and cost of living, not “more shouting”

The Progressive Labour Party issued the following statement.

The Bermuda Progressive Labour Party acknowledges Mr. King’s election as the 7th OBA leader in 8 years.

Bermudians will by now know MP King’s style well. His loud, often error filled attacks, have become a hallmark of his short time in Parliament.

Like most Bermudians, we believe that Bermuda doesn’t need more shouting; we need steady leadership that protects Bermudian families, fights to drive down the cost of living and works for all Bermudians and not just an elite, privileged few.

That is what the PLP is working to deliver and in the days and months ahead we will not be distracted by OBA attempts to divide, distort and distract.

Popular Sydney beach deploys drones, helicopter after fatal shark attack

Two beaches in Australia’s most populous city remained closed on Sunday after the attack on Saturday morning

International News via Reuters:

Australian authorities on Sunday deployed drones and a helicopter to monitor the waters around a popular Sydney beach after a surfer was killed by a great white shark on Saturday, officials said.

Two beaches in Australia’s most populous city remained closed on Sunday after the attack on Saturday morning that took place about 100 m (328 ft) from shore while the man was surfing with friends at Long Reef Beach, in the north of the New South Wales state capital.

The experienced surfer was pulled from the water by other surfers, but had lost too much blood and died at the scene, police said. It was the first shark-attack death in Sydney since a swimmer was killed off a beach in February 2022, which the city’s first since 1963.

On Sunday, the state’s main water rescue organisation, Surf Life Saving NSW, deployed drones and a helicopter to surveil the area for the shark, New South Wales Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) said.

More so-called SMART drumlines, which use satellite technology to notify authorities when a shark is hooked on a baited line, had also been installed, it said in a statement.

Government shark biologists, after assessing photos of the victim’s surfboard, “determined a White shark approximately 3.4-3.6 metres (11.15-11.81 feet) in length was likely responsible” for the mauling, DPIRD said.

White sharks are also commonly known as great white sharks or white pointers, according to the agency.

Saturday’s incident marked the fourth fatal shark attack in Australia in 2025, data from the state-run operator of Sydney’s Taronga Zoo shows. In March, a surfer was killed by a shark in shallow water on a remote beach in Western Australia.

Australia ranked behind only the United States in the number of unprovoked shark bites on humans in 2024, according to the University of Florida’s International Shark Attack File.

Thousands bid silent farewell to Giorgio Armani in Milan

Armani, who had no children, has put in place measures to ensure continuity and independence for his business

International News via Reuters:

Thousands of mourners visited Milan’s fashion district on Saturday to pay their respects to Giorgio Armani, Italy’s most famous designer, who died this week at the age of 91, filing in silence past his coffin.

His wooden casket, with white roses placed on top, lay in the vast dark exhibition space at his company’s headquarters, where catwalk shows are held, surrounded by dozens of small lanterns on the floor.

The passing of Armani has sparked an outpouring of grief with tributes flowing in from Hollywood celebrities and ordinary people alike. Over a career spanning five decades, he built a business empire ranging from haute couture to home furnishing, with his name becoming synonymous with elegant simplicity.

“Everything he did in his life he did it out of passion,” said Pier Carlo Bertoglio, who travelled from nearby Lodi to the Armani offices, where the designer’s body is lying in state over the weekend before a private funeral on Monday.

“Everyone here today should testify to the love they have received from him.”

John Elkann, the scion of Italy’s prominent Agnelli family, and his wife Lavinia, were among the first visitors.

Elkann, who heads the Agnelli family’s investment vehicle Exor, had previously discussed a potential combination with Armani to create an Italian luxury goods conglomerate, including Exor-owned sports car maker Ferrari. The talks led nowhere.

Armani, who had no children, has put in place measures to ensure continuity and independence for his business, which he ran with trusted family members and long-time colleagues.

Early visitors also included Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala. Italy’s fashion capital, where Armani relocated with his family after World War Two, will hold a day of public mourning on Monday.

“Milan is full of Armani ‘signs’, it would be impossible to forget him,” Sala said. “His biggest legacy to the city I reckon is his profound belief in work as a means of self-realisation.”

People queued silently under the trees that line the cul-de-sac where the Armani offices, designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando, sit across from the Armani/Silos, a museum opened in 2015 to mark 40 years of his career and where the Armani Prive haute couture collections of the past 20 years are currently on display.

Visitors included fellow designer Donatella Versace, who arrived dressed in black carrying a bouquet of white orchids, Oscar-winning film director Gabriele Salvatores and actress Maria Grazia Cucinotta.

“Where I grew up in China, Armani’s name is equal to Italian (style),” said Jonah Liu, who stood in the crowd sporting an Armani t-shirt and holding a small bunch of white daisies.

“He turned Italian elegance into a global fashion grammar … I’m obliged to come here to pay my tribute to him.”

In line with Armani’s wishes, a separate entry was reserved for group staff.

“I’m one of his employees, so I’m sincerely attached to him,” said Alessandra Caccavo, wiping away the tears.

“He made sure we never wanted for anything … he was exceptional, so hospitable, … we would always see him in the offices, which means a lot when you think who he was.”

King crowned as new leader of the OBA

Robert King defeated Ben Smith in a vote at this evening’s party conference

Ben Smith, left, and the victorious Robert King

Robert King has tonight been elected as the new leader of the One Bermuda Alliance.
He triumphed over fellow-contender Ben Smith, in a vote at the OBA’s 2025 Party
Conference at the Vasco Da Gama Club.

The election came after incumbent Jarion Richardson’s announcement, earlier this
summer, that he planned to step down.

Mr. King entered politics after Michael Dunkley’s retirement, winning the Smith’s North
by-election in May 2024 and the same seat in February’s General Election.

In a recent statement he pledged to “deliver the determined leadership Bermuda
deserves”.

Mr. King has previously stated that “trust in politics has been broken,” and pledged to
serve full-time as Opposition Leader.

“Bermudians don’t need more empty pledges,” he has said, “they need leadership that
works full-time, rebuilds trust and delivers results”.

The OBA has described him as a seasoned criminal justice professional with more than
30 years’ experience working with at-risk youth and vulnerable populations in Bermuda
and Canada.

Mr. King recently rolled out a 100-day action plan.

He said his first steps as leader would be “putting people first” through a series of town
halls and a monthly open house from the Opposition Leader’s office.

He also promised a refreshed communications strategy, mentoring for new MPs,
professional development for candidates, and building the fundraising and volunteer
machinery to win government. His plan includes creating a Youth Wing and a Women’s
Commission within the party.

We will have more on this story in subsequent reports.

Jordan-Whitter’s UNE Team Dominates in Inaugural Match

Bermudian tennis coach leads University of New England women’s tennis team to a winning start to the season

The University of New England women’s tennis team, led by Head Coach Jovan Jordan-Whitter, has made a dream start to its new varsity season, surrendering only eight games en route to a dominant 7-0 victory over Vermont State University-Johnson.

The win marks a historic moment for the program as it enters its inaugural season as UNE’s 20th varsity sport. The team’s dominance was clear from the start, as they were awarded a point from a forfeit at #6 singles and quickly added to the lead by sweeping the doubles matches with 6-0 wins from both pairs.

The singles matches were no different. Madeline Frank made it 3-0 with a win at #1 singles (6-1, 6-0), and Olivia Crooker clinched the deciding point at #5 (6-0, 6-2). Alyssa Fritschka delivered a perfect performance at #4 singles, winning both sets at love (6-0, 6-0), while Nora Hill and team captain Sydney Pelletier also secured convincing wins to seal the 7-0 shutout.

The result is a perfect start for Jordan-Whitter’s team as they prepare for a 17-match fall schedule, including ten crucial Conference of New England (CNE) battles.

Overseas Student Enrols at Bermuda College

(Hamilton, Bermuda – September 5, 2025) Bermuda has long been a “happy place” for Kathryn Law — but this year, the connection runs even deeper.

The 18-year-old from Charlotte, North Carolina, has made the Island her home after enrolling at Bermuda College to study marine science.

Drawn by deep family roots and a passion for the ocean, Kathryn is now pursuing an Associate Degree in Marine Science, with hopes of a career in conservation and research.

Her Bermudian ties date back generations. Her great-great-grandfather, Albert E. Nicholl, came to Bermuda at the turn of the 20th century, and her grandmother, Sandra Nicholl, was raised on the Island.

Though her grandmother now lives in Florida, Kathryn has been visiting Bermuda since she was 11 and says she feels “more at home here than where I grew up.”

Initially considering a nursing career in the US, Kathryn shifted her focus after falling in love with Bermuda’s marine environment.

“I just really wanted to give back to Bermuda. Every time I’ve visited, I felt more connected to the Island and its natural beauty,” she said. “Marine science gives me a way to help protect it.”

She is aiming for an internship at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) and ultimately hopes to work as a marine biologist or research assistant.

Kathryn said her experience at Bermuda College has been overwhelmingly positive. “I love my professors — they’re outgoing, funny, and supportive,” she said.

She also praised the affordability of her two-year programme and the ease of securing accommodation, as she is staying at her great-grandfather’s former home with family friends.

Encouraging other overseas students to consider Bermuda College, Kathryn added: “If you’re passionate about the ocean, this is the place to be. The reefs, the research opportunities, the people — it’s all amazing.”
